Re: Favorite Movie?
I'm gonna have to agree with Bernout on "We Were Soldiers"
Why: Hueys, vietnam war, characters have depth, explosions, ass-kicking.
I'd like to say that I watch movies solely for their emotional effect but I don't. All I want is entertainment. I guess I shouldn't be going in to film production, huh...

Re: Favorite Movie?
Some really good movies mentioned here like Last of the Mohecans, We were soldiers and Saving Private Ryan all such epic movies for me. I would also like to add the patriot, not the whole movie but the scene where they ambush the soldiers who stole his son - OMG the blood rage in that scene was epic, and now that I have two little girls I have started my search for a good tomahawk to store under the bed.
My favourite would still have to be Brave Heart. That movie rocked my world when I saw it. I laughed at some points, cried like a baby at others and of course the battle scenes were brilliant. But it also had more tender moments and a love story that was engaging. The movie really had me invested in it, careing about the characters and jumping out of my seat filled with testotarone and rage during the battles.

Re: Favorite Movie?
I like Saving Private Ryan.
The characters, the realism, the cinematography was just unbelievable. I also liked how Spielberg didn't try to make heroes of the Americans or demonize the Germans, he just showed that most were just humans caught in a bad situation.
I am interested in anything in World War II due to my Grandfather being in a prison camp for over 2 years, his twin brother serving as well, and my other Grandfather being a surgeon in a battalion aid station that was attached to the unit that liberated my grandfather from the prison camp.
Close are:
Star Wars for the amazing special effects and the amazing amount of depth Lucas put into the story.
Schindler's List - just for the power of the film and all the artistry that went into it with the decision on the use of certain colors even though the majority of the film was black and white, they symbolism, etc.

Re: Favorite Movie?
Jaws
Reason: At the time it crippled beach communities. No one went swiming in the ocean, many people didnt even swim in their pool. I tried to remember another movie that had such an effect on society.

Re: Favorite Movie?
Got a three way tie here, and I can't help it:
The Godfather - Part 1 & 2 then Part 3. All superb, from casting of characters & costumes, thru score and cinematography, classic. The Family name, and the attempt to re-invent. I know the lines cause I watched it so much.
Excaliber - Beautiful to watch, gorgeous cinematography. Classic interpretation of King Arthur. The use of Wagner's Siefried for the score was perfect. I know the lines for this one too! "Guards, knights, squires.....prepare for battle!"
Smokie and the Bandit - Just typing it, makes me crack up. Buford T. Justice! "There's no way, *no* way that you came from *my* loins. Soon as I get home, first thing I'm gonna do is punch yo mamma in da mouth!
The End

Re: Favorite Movie?
Way of the Gun - you can pick up this title for $5 and its got the best dialouge of any movie ever. Seriously you have to watch it twice and really listen to what each actor says as all of it ties together sooner or later in the film. Written by the guy who wrote Usual Suspects it also packs an All-star well some star cast. BY THE WAY - BEST OPENING EVER!!! starring Sarah Silverman.
Edit: and here it is god bless youtube -WARNING EXPLICATE-
two things I want you to take from this if you are going to watch the full film:
one check out the non verbal communication - also a huge part of this great movie
two even the cinamatography uses foreshadowing - from a movie writers perspective this movie is uncanny
PS also notice when Sarah is leaving the fight see is saying "why did you pick a fight with them? why?" these little moments makes the writing great- also what i mean by really listen.
So in conclusion, plus a bet you all are sick of reading this, this movie uses spoken word, non-verbal communication, and cinimatography to tell this intricate story. The rest of the film is more serious.
I hate to jump on the Zohar wagon but The Professional would have been one of mine including:
Donnie Darco - mind blowing
Fight Club
Star Wars 4,5,6
Matrix - 2nd only to star wars as most ground breaking
Usual Suspects
Shaun of the Dead - british are funny
Gia - you know why

Re: Favorite Movie?
Well I have three that I consider to be my favorite movies: The Boondock Saints, Equilibrium, and V for Vendetta. However since the request is for only one I have to pick my favorite for this week as Equilibrium. (next week it might change)
To be honest the movie is BETTER then The Matrix when it comes to fight scenes. the acting is rather strong, the concept well thought out, and the political and ethical sub tones are fantastic.
In short if you want a fast action shooter,+A. If you want a movie that will also make you think about different social and political possibilities ++A.
I guess I'm just a nerd like that. I enjoy movies that have a fair amount of action yet also make you think.

Re: Favorite Movie?
I'd not heard of Equilibrium, but I really liked V for Vendetta when I watched it a few weeks ago on cable.
Another good film in that genre is Terry Gilliam's Brazil.

I'm gonna have to go with echoing jmaker's pick here. Shawshank Redemption is amazing. I feel a little alone though since I've had my family sit through a viewing and got nothing more than a "meh" at the end. I'm pretty passionate about this movie.
I'm an advocate for the underdog, always have been and always will be. After having his life pretty much go down the ****ter, our protagonist used his knowledge and resourcefulness to turn the tables on everyone that took it upon themselves to take advantage of him. It's the classic come from behind!
Morgan Freeman has a fantastic method and I'm so glad they used his voice to tell this story. I don't usually enjoy features based on Stephen King's work but this was spectacular.

I can't name a favorite, but one of my favorites is Die Hard, and it is hands down the best holiday movie ever created.

Re: Favorite Movie?
The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension.
Peter Weller as an Adventurer/Brain Surgeon/Physicist/Crime Fighter/Rock Star. How can you beat that? It had two types of aliens, Buckaroo's compadres...the Hong Kong Cavaliers, a love story, a great twist involving Orson Welles, and saving the world from destruction. Also starred John Lithgow, Jeff Goldblum, and Christopher Lloyd.
It bombed at the box office, but I loved it when I was a Junior in H.S. and just showed it to my kids this year and they thought it was a hoot too. My 9 year old has probably watched it 5 times this year.
Mission Control: "Buckaroo, The White House wants to know is everything ok with the alien space craft from Planet 10 or should we just go ahead and destroy Russia?"
Buckaroo Banzai: "Tell him yes on one and no on two."
Mission Control: "Which one was yes, go ahead and destroy Russia... or number 2?"
