Re: The TG Spore Universe
Played it on easy and was in space within 10h or so. So yeah from that point on its quite simple. Doing the normal mode now and its taking me a bit longer.
I get the idea though that the most time will be spend in the space-part of the game.
If you want my honest opinion, I think it not too bad.
What I do think is wierd though is that you can change you creature all over everytime you go to the designer section. Meaning I can make it a carnivore 1 time and a herbivore the 2nd. Would have been more realistic if the choices would be a bit more within boundries.

Re: The TG Spore Universe
I'd say its worth it. It is very simple, and you'll probably tire of it eventually, but its still very fun and fresh, and pretty funny. I'm just about to start the civilization stage. Its pretty cool how your behavior and actions dictate which types of paths are open to you. If you go carnivore, it seems pretty damn hard to switch off that route.
My username is Anospa if you wanna search for anything, though I don't have too much made at the moment.

Re: The TG Spore Universe
So there is no direct interaction with other players, aside from the worlds and creatures you meet will be other people's?
Young Man approached the black monolith that emitted a faint glow and humming noise, and it became clear to him that he should fire not where the alien ship is, but where it is going to be. -Magna Centipede

Re: The TG Spore Universe
So my questions so far:
1) Can you choose every single detail about what you want your creature to look like/act like? (1-50 legs, 1-10 arms, etc. etc. and being more of a carnivour thats dumbwitted, enormous and just rules the land vs. a small being that seems to be super intelligent?)
2) How is the interaction with the creatures? I'd be guessing it isnt something like the Sims or age of empires and probably not even like Black and White 2 or anything.. Any ways to describe it anyone?
3) So how is this multiplayer? So far it seems like Im reading that its more of a single player does nothing, players creatures can interact but a player cant decide to go and take over another players planet and all of that..?
4) Is their a resource system? Like you would need some of your guys to go and get resources, some to defend against the natural animals of the world/other tribes and some to build up your city???
5) Can you breed animals for certain things? (Humans-Cows for their milk and meat, Creatures-W\e for their meat and money in the hide or something...)

Re: The TG Spore Universe
I've played this game up to the space portion and while it is highly addictive I don't see a lot of replay value in it. It's a fun little game but I was honestly expecting more from all the hype.
Maybe I'm just jaded, I've been wanting another Simcity for years now. (Societies doesn't count)

Re: The TG Spore Universe
Basically, spore is as follows
The cell game is an asteroid shooter with a customizable ship. It's decent, but not as much fun as Geometry wars, or even as much fun as a traditional asteroid shooter.
The creature game is a third person action RPG. You have a character, you fight monsters for Xp, you can recruit a small party, and you can customize your character. It's sort of fun, but again, it's not as good as an actual, full function ARPG would be. The control isn't that good, the 'animals' don't behave convincingly, just sort of milling around their spawn points instead of hunting, nesting, grazing (there are no grazing animals in spore). All animals are pack animals, there are no solitary hunters or herd animals, and they all use the same limited AI.
The tribal game is a squad level tactical game, but again, it's badly lacking in features. You build a tribe of up to a dozen guys, fight a few other tribes, and then your done. Poor control and pathfinding mean that you're basically zerging your guys at their guys until you win.
The civilization game is an RTS, and in keeping with the pattern it's lacking features. You have one resource and six units to choose from. It doesn't matter how you customize the units, because they're just expendable zerg fodder. You have one air, one land, and one sea unit for military and religious bases. Which means you can't really use any tactics because all your troops do the same thing, you don't really get enough of them to have multiple groups, and anyway the game doesn't really reward tactical or strategic thinking.
The space game is any good space empire or space trading game, but without any of the sophistication and complexity that makes those games truly enjoyable.
Basically, spore is five mediocre games strung together in one attractive package. None of the components are good enough to stand on their own. When you look at all five together, instead of a combination that is better than the sum of it's parts, what you get is a clear sense that, at any point in the game, you'd be having a lot more fun playing Asteroids, Diablo, Populous, Civilization IV, and Masters of Orion.
The real shame of it is that Spore is almost really great. If it was just a touch more sophisticated, If the creatures in Critter mode actually hunted, moved in herds, stalked, mated, and so on. If the diplomacy in tribal mode actually mattered, if you could lay real ambushes, if hunting or farming were important instead of just time consuming. If Civ mode actually allowed you a variety of units, some semblance of combined arms, some semblance of tactics. If the space mode gave you better control over your civilization, instead of leaving you to micromanage a huge and complex area stretched over literally thousands of star system, Spore would have been great. And it's not. It's just five mediocre games.Last edited by FrankManik; 09-10-2008 at 03:55 AM.

Re: The TG Spore Universe
Not to mention the deal-breaking (for me, and for many other people, like the thousands on Amazon right now) copy protection and DRM. You can't install the game more than 3 times, ever, or you need to call and ask EA for another activation, and it installs the same rootkit-like Securom 7 copy protection onto your computer as Mass Effect did, which has already been a magnet for a few viruses, because the copy protection gives the program higher-than-admin access to your root, with files that can't be accessed directly by admin priveledged users, or removed from the computer by them.
Sorry, with this description of the game that was supposed to be a brilliant, procedurally programmed evolution game, now turned into something like EVO for the SNES.. afraid i'm not going to buy it anymore, and with the copy-protection, I might as well pirate it and save myself the DRM and rootkit trouble (it was cracked a few hours after australia's release, anyway..)

Re: The TG Spore Universe
Or, you could at least buy it then crack it.
That way you support the gaming industry (even in this DRM case) and still get a DRM free game in the end. Just go to the store, buy the game, but install a pirated copy.
