    Re: The TG Spore Universe

Everything before the space stage is simplistic, but follows a nice pattern of things. The replay value, however, is probably in the fact that there are maybe 12 distinct 'classes' in the space stage depending on the combination of progression you made over your evolution.

There are, of course, certain penalties and profits for your choices. Example: If you evolve from the cell stage as only an omnivore, then the creature parts for carnivores and herbivores are locked out. Of course, this could be gotten around by just sticking 3 sets of jaws on your cell and being some sort of super omnivore and all sorts of silliness.

Another oddity is that regardless of how many parts you stick on your creature (and if you conqure all the packs and even the rogue solitary creatures you get over 4000 DNA points) only the highest level skill is attributed to your creature from any 1 part. So if you covered your creature in armored pieces and made a walking bone tank you'd still only get +5 health from the highest level bone armor piece. You get more strike rank (the arm attack) from a single pseudoarm stuck on randomly with a level 5 strike part than you would with 8 menacing claws placed logically.

BTW Frank, in the creature segment there are what you said is lacking. There are herd creatures that will migrate from place to place (as your own creature does) and there are solitary hunters of both the rogue (super creatures you can recruit) and epic (giant creatures of the T-Rex size and scope) variety. Also if a carnivore/omnivore herd is positioned close to any other nest they will send out hunting packs to try and eliminate the other herd. Those creatures will also continue to evolve (turning into oddly shaped and invulnerable pod things for a period of time) if they expand their territory wide enough. However the evolutions don't make much in the way of sense since they'll just turn into some other created creature with higher stats. After weakening the herds around 1 low level carnivore herd I had the odd experience of letting them take over the surounding herds to evolve into a lesser generation of my own creation.
My sanity is not in question...
It was a confirmed casualty some time ago.

Light, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to hide the bodies of the people I had to kill because they ticked me off.

So, it's been out nearly a week, I've heard good, bad and 'ehhh's about this game.

Should I buy this or not?

    A few things...

Why should I, in this case, reward EA for doing this. Buying the game is giving them another sale, and bringing up thier revenues all the same, no matter if I don't even install it and use a downloaded and cracked version. Buying the game is telling them that it was alright that they screwed me over, feel free to do it again on any subsequent games. And as was just recently linked in the other SPORE thread, that is happening (oh boy, we gave you 2 extra activations. we're keeping everything else. Our market analyst says thats fair!").Additionally, I'l have to wait for a new cracked version (if at all) whenever they patch the game, and as this is EA we're talking about, that could be every month. Enough customers boycotted Ubisoft's games and brought up enough class action lawsuits about STARFORCE (another DRM copy protection scheme that had deleterious effects on windows and the hardware itself, causing anything from complete failure of disk drives due to the way it worked to bluescreens) that the company finally saw no profit in continuing to pump out games with that copy protection in them.

This is similar to when i bought XIII, that contained a buggy version of STARFORCE. The game would install and start, but would be unplayable: the game would constantly ask for the original Disc 1 upon loading the first level, and refuse to recognize that the Disc 1 I inserted was legitimate, even though I needed to insert Disc 1 to START the game, but it wouldn't recognize it was legit after loading level 1. In the end, I had to run a cleaner to remove STARFORCE, check that it was fully gone in my registry, and download a cracked exe to play a game I legitimately bought.

    About activations, etc..
About 2 months ago I purchased Rise of Legends, the last in the Rise of Nations series of games. This game came out quarter 4 2006 or so. After I installed it, I went to play it. Everything went well, except I was unable to find patches anywhere. The first RoN had an autopatcher if you wanted it to, so i started the autopatcher... which froze for about a minute. Then returned with a fatal error, that it was unable to find the servers. I thought it was my settings, so i did it again while the router was DMZ'd, still nothing. I go to try multiplayer, and.. it cannot find the authentication server. No news was on the official website, and it appeared to be dead a few months after the release. Furthermore, there was no patches to be found, the website said point blank that "Patches are not available for download. To update the game, use the "check for updates" button on the main menu".

I checked a RoN fansite and found out that at the end of July, Microsoft turned off the autopatcher servers. The downside to this was that you could no longer patch the game from release state. The other downside to this is that the game checks the patch servers to get the hash of the latest patch, and tell you if you're not running the latest version of the game. Without this step, multiplayer DOESN'T WORK, it kicks you out of the menu after failing. To update the game, I had to check a torrent site, find the EU patches, download a NA converter (and a missing patch for NA that EU didn't get) and install those, and to play multiplayer, i'l have to use a community portal and use Hamachi while hosting a LAN game.

What are my assurances that the activation servers will still be up a year, two years, 3 years from now? If they aren't, I'l be unable to play the game I bought legally anyway. It'l be a 50 dollar coaster.

Also, I have no idea what to expect on HARD, but on normal, what you said is true pretty much...

I ran into a few rouges so far, I allied one, but... an epic came. I never saw that rouge again...

Yep their needs to be a new good game creating company, one that EA cant just buy out like normal... Would be kind of happy if EA went out of business or atleast changed their top managers or whatever it is that makes them a-holes so long as the quality of games could stay at the top..

Okay, the game is definately growing on me in the space phase. Is there any word on an SDK? This game could benefit greatly from a little community modding.

I dont get how people can bash a Sandbox game. In reality, what they're bashing is their own creative potential. If the game sux, YOU suck basically. Spore isnt a game. It's a set of tools with a few minigames. Learn to master the tools and enjoy what you come up with and share it. Stop worrying about AI pathing, min-maxing, and RTS.

As for the modding potential, what it needs is some way to make our own real-time MP server.

I made it to space. I've been having fun with just the pre-space levels. It seems to be more fun when you have an idea of the creature you want to create then go about using the available parts to make it.

I think there should be more Cell stage content.

    I'm serious - I love it.

I sort of wish the fish stage had been left in.

Eitherway, my Spore ID is FrankManik. Download my stuff! It's pretty!

It seems that there are tons of winged bipeds running around. On a lot of planets I visit the whole ecosystem is different kinds of winged bipeds. I've taken to creating a couple of cows every time I log on to try to boost the numbers of animals that don't look silly. Anyone else found weird populations?

I've added all of you to my buddy list. You've all got some interesting creations. Anyone have any creations that they are really proud of how they came out?
