    Re: DSL or CABLE

If you want to do all you can to improve your ping times, you need to use this site:

    http://www.dslreports.com/

At the top go to the tools section and use all the tools there you can, and it should be able to help you some. If you still arn't happy, look through their forums and find the right one for you. Post what you have and what tools you used and what you are hoping to get. Don't just post in the forums without using the tools first, or they will probably just tell you to go use the tools, then come back to the forums.

Also, you never stated what your ping time is actually. Are we talking over 100 here? Talking to your cable company tech after doing a trace route and explaining things might get you somewhere also, if you get the right tech guy that knows what he is doing.

Also, I didn't see it mentioned, but with DSL, the further away from the like community router box you are, the slower your speeds/ping. So unless you are in a really built up area with the box close by, DSL might be a bad choice.

I get pings of about 150ish from Idaho. I'm curious if DSL would be faster (unsure if I can even get DSL...), but is it really worth the time and money just to check? Ehh...

I've complained to TWC about my pings, as there's serious bottlenecks in the 'local' hops (the first five or so, that everywhere else in the god damn world are reported as "<1ms", ping 5-10ms EACH), but they told me that if I wasn't satisfied, I could eat a dick.

No my ping averages 70-80 usually. I'm not having a big problem with it but I would like to improve it. Thanks for listing a link to help me.

Mech Warrior, post back if you get some fixes done and your ping time improves so other people can give it a go.

Also, just as something else I learned, XP is actually pretty crappy when it comes to network management, since it was released in the early 2000's, and most people then didn't have much more than dial up. There are tons of tweaks you can do to improve your networking.

Vista on the other hand from what I have read is actually very good at modern networking and tweaks itself mostly to run the best. Most of the tools at the link I posted above if you read about them say something like use for XP, because Vista already has it set right.
