Re: [Ike] Houston TGers: Good luck to you
Update at 4pm.
Eye is going to go by really close. Pressure has dropped to 29.45inHg. NOAA reports wind is NNE at 25kts in League City and . Water level in marina is now up maybe 6ft. Its coming out of the bulkheaded marina and flooding the parking lots. Storm crosses coast at about 1am. Latest on the news is 20-22ft of surge.
I going out for a walk to find high ground for the car; likely that 2 story parking garage at the South Shore Hotel.
Check back with you later.

Re: [Ike] Houston TGers: Good luck to you
I recall photos of a fleet of school buses in New Orleans intended for evacuation left to submerge due to incompetence among the organizations that were supposed to use them.
Are there no such buses in Galveston to take people away who can't afford to leave on their own?
If I actually got decent warning of a quake likely to do severe damage to my house, I'd be heading for points east. (I have a place to stay, but I also have relatives scattered around the state.)Dude, seriously, WHAT handkerchief?

Re: [Ike] Houston TGers: Good luck to you
The ftp site I used for those slosh models is slammed. So forgive the missing models. I dont think I'll post any more resource links here though because TG is too visible.
In other news: levees HAVE broken in vermillion parish, LA and many people are flooded out over there. Surge levels got close to 10ft there. Surge levels right now in Galv. are 8+ but leveling out before the final onslought. Right now is just the initial "bulge" of water. When the storm comes in you add the windswept surge to the picture which for a Cat. 2 is 6-8ft, plus add 1ft of tide, and extra surge created by wave action. So I'm guessing a 20+ft surge plus 10-12ft waves on top.
Remember also, Port Arthur and the Beaumont area look to get it even worse than Galveston. PA will most likely no longer exist tomorrow morning either.

Re: [Ike] Houston TGers: Good luck to you
About 730pm here.
Wind is now gusting to 48mph at the League City NOAA office just south of me. The Galveston office is off the air.
It is howling outside. The water level is up about another foot. Still no worries for me. I figure I got 10 more feet before it gets to the parking lot.
Several sailboats in the marina have lost their roller furling sails and many very expensive powerboats have lost their bimini tops. Just can't understand why these folks just neglect their expensive boats - guess they ar rich and don't care.
The noise is impressive. It howls now as the wind gusts. Not much rain but looks like that will change.
Eye is 85 miles away and the news folks say brace for about 100mph winds tonite.
Still got power and internet which surprises me.
Pressure is 29.34 and dropping. Central pressure is 28.2.
It is low tide now and unfortunately high tide is at about the landfall time. Very annoying.
Will see what happens in a couple of hours.
Maybe I should join the folks downstairs having a party? LOL.

Re: [Ike] Houston TGers: Good luck to you
Update 9pm.
Eyewall just coming over Galveston Island per news and radar. Wind still about 50kts consistent.
Light rain. Expecting more soon.
Quite noisy actually.
Pressure 29.2 and dropping. Center pressure is 28.11.
250,000 folks now without electricity in my general area....guess I'm lucky up to now.
Back to watching the radar...can't focus on POE right now

Re: [Ike] Houston TGers: Good luck to you
So, 6am and there's about a million people without power and the only reason I'm awake (I went to bed a 2am) is because the intermittent black-outs keep resetting the pumps on my fish-tanks. Pretty hairy out there, but I haven't noticed any downed trees or other major debris yet. Granted, I'm a bit west, but the boat is doing well out in front of the house (I'd rather park my $30,000 truck in the garage than my POS boat).
Internet works great though. Maybe I should play some CoD4.

Re: [Ike] Houston TGers: Good luck to you
Laptop battery power is low but I found I had a phone connection....
Holy ****...what a nite.
Everything ok until about midnite. Wind steadily picked up and was NE at going up 100mph. Trees and bushes coming apart.
Eye went over about 1am and it went quiet. Went to sleep. Wind shifted to SW at 100mph+. The window on my SW facing apt cracked at 3am and well lets say it got wet inside. Picking up leaves and debris from the living room this morning. Everything inside wet.
Water was forced around all windows and under doors. Place is soaked.
Water in the marina came up I say 12 feet, about 2 ft from bottom floor.
I dragged a bush off my car this morning...everything here with 4inch trunks is split off.
At 3am this huge 4 story building was shaking.
There are about 500 very expensive boats in the marina in front of me and there are dozens of bimini tops totally stripped off. Folks who left their roller furling on their sailboats are in for a surprise.
There are mattresses floating in the marina??
Some roof damage and most chimmeys are whacked.
Got the AM radio up this am and found out that 4-5 million folks have no power.
So, going into camping mode for a few days. Authorities have curfews out and this is Texas...i.e., don't **** with people or the police....lots of guns here including my stock.
Battery nearly dead.
Cya.

Re: [Ike] Houston TGers: Good luck to you
Man Nagin, if you say 2ft left before it went to the ground floor your building is mighty lucky. We saw about 13ft max at the Galv. bay entrance, and 12ft at Clear Lake. The last "wobble" of the eye put it about 20miles further NE then it shoulda been... had it stuck to the forecast track youd've had 5 more ft of water in your building.
Over there between Crystal Beach and Port Arthur was about 17.4ft of surge at the coast. Inland where the water backs up it grew to 30ft. Crystal Beach is basically gone like most of Galveston.
I'd say many parts of Galv/Houston JUUUST squirted by. But from what I've been seeing Galv. is basically quite near a total loss anyways, but not due to catastrophic surge like with Katrina. Just the raw flooding.
Good luck man... I'm curious as to how long it's gonna take to restore power. For us here in SoFla it took 6weeks in some cases - and you guys have way more people.
