Re: [Ike] Houston TGers: Good luck to you
Galveston Island and Bolivar Penisular are really, really badly damaged.
Boliver on the east side of eye....well 80% of everything...not there anymore.
Everything around me....hmmmm....lots of boats on the highways.
Damn it is hot and humid....
Water is going down. The debris is amazing.
Wet carpet has that tropical mold smell as it rots.
FEMA is like as usually not on the ball...nothing anywhere...
I have my coleman stove and cooked some bacon this morning...hmmm good and drinking water out out of my plastic 5gal containers.
Amazing the phone connection is up.
I remember this from other storms...the freaking red ants all start climbing up the building...I'm whacking them all over the place....
Damn it was hot last nite....85F and totally humid...cold front per radio supposed to flow thru today.
At 3am while I'm awake trying to get some sleep the building fire alarm goes off...damn big bell on the wall outside my window...no fire...some low water pressure BS. Neighbors attempt to jam it with downed palm fronds....I retreated to the living room and stuffed a pillow in my head....10am fire guys pop up and fix it. I was going to empty 30 rounds of .223 into it but thought that might aggrevate the police.
Something weird....the news folks are not being allowed to go to Boliver...likely because of the dead bodies and adverse publicity like Katrina. 100s of folks did not evacuate and they were washed away....OMG.
Overall...Houston area totally frekked...suggest living somewhere safe like Bagdad.
Nagin....

Re: [Ike] Houston TGers: Good luck to you
Hi guys,
I just wanted to say thanks for everyone's concern. My family made it through fine; we got through with only a few fallen down fences, fallen branches, and two days without power. We were well prepared (meaning ready for 5 days without any relief assistance). It was a bit surprising how many people were clamoring for supplies and angry at the power company only one day after the storm, though. I mean, over 2,000,000 customers lost power and people were getting ready to call the power company/government incompetent after only one day.
My heart goes out to those in Galveston, High Island, Bolivar, Seabrook, Surfside, Kemah, and all of the coastal communities for what they've lost. From the news coverage before the storm, it looks as much as 20-30% of people in Galveston and Bolivar may have ignored the evacuation orders and stayed. Houston and the surrounding areas are ready to start rebuilding and to help each other through this disaster.

Re: [Ike] Houston TGers: Good luck to you
Here's a video of Clear Lake during the storm (where Nagin was, probably real close too). Note: this could've been a LOT worse and is why I advised Nagin to leave. Nagin buddy, you're lucky dude. As for now, unless you're comfortable with living in the Dark Ages for a month+, kinda pointless to stay in Houston IMO. I know a lot of people in SoFla after Katrina/Wilma just went on extended vacations to family in New York, etc. After about 3-days of roughing it things start to get old real fast.

Re: [Ike] Houston TGers: Good luck to you
That's crazy! I'm working in the Houston area, but go to San Antonio and Fort Worth on weekends. My client called me today and said not to bother coming, because their power was still out and I couldn't get a hotel room either. I'm glad the TG crew is ok. This hurricane was some serious business, huh?

I dunno if you guys noticed but there was a systemwide internet "blackout" for many folks in certain areas last night due to Ike. Traffic is having to be re-routed since some hubs went offline.

Exactly the place. That google photo shows what it was like. I've spent a bunch of time over there in those laid back fishing/beach areas. Now it is all totally wiped off the map.
If the eye had moved further west I would have experienced something like that and many more of us here south of Clear Lake would not be here. The news folks reported tonite that the whole of Galveston Island and many other communities around me near the Bay are no longer habitable. I got called to report to work this morning. I work at a large refinery which had to be shutdown. As part of the national energy infrastructure we have to get that refinery back up. I tried to go north my usual way and there on the road were dozens of boats piled up like junk along with tons of debris blocking the Kemah bridge area. Worked my way west and north and finally got to work. The refinery is down but with little damage, but we have start the whole place up - 2nd largest refinery in the country. And, guess what we have no nitrogen and can't get any because the N2 plants are down. We need N2 to inert the units before introducing hydrocarbons or we risk blowing the whole place up.
It is happening all over again. No gas. No power for millions. Delayed response by FEMA. Squabbling between state/city/county/federal agencies. Meanwhile thousands and thousands of people sit in mud if they are alive having lost everything and they can't even get a bottle of water. Tens of thousands of people are trying to get gas for generators if they are lucky to be able to afford one. Food is rotting in hundreds of thousands of houses and little can be done.
So whereever you live and whatever natural disaster may happen in your area...cover your own back - it may be the only way you and family make it out alive. If you depend on government agencies to save you well are the optimist.
I'm fortunate tonite I have my power on and am drying the place out and making ice in the refrigerator and have this internet connection.
And I sit here thinking OMG where can I live and work and not have to prepare for natural disasters....likely nowhere I guess.
Nagin.
