Re: [Ike] Houston TGers: Good luck to you
Gambit7,
I can't recognize the location of that video but likely within a couple of miles of me. BTW that is exactly what it looked like outside at 3am. Unless you have been in one of this things you just can't imagine the noise, power and utter futility of believing you can just walk out there and hang onto a tree or something. These things are just massive death machines sans radiation. Here's a video of Clear Lake during the storm (where Nagin was, probably real close too). Note: this could've been a LOT worse and is why I advised Nagin to leave. Nagin buddy, you're lucky dude. As for now, unless you're comfortable with living in the Dark Ages for a month+, kinda pointless to stay in Houston IMO. I know a lot of people in SoFla after Katrina/Wilma just went on extended vacations to family in New York, etc. After about 3-days of roughing it things start to get old real fast.
Thanks for posting that and also thanks to the others who posted those stills. They are humbling reminders.

Glad to see you're doing ok Nagin. When I saw where the hurricane was going I thought of you and Snarlin. Any word on how he and his family are doing? You guys are in my thoughts and prayers.

Re: [Ike] Houston TGers: Good luck to you
No Haze, I haven't heard anything from him. Lots of folks evacuated the lower zip zones of Harris County and today the mayor has said don't come back to Clear Lake City yet. Basically cause roads are a mess, no power and no fuel. There a quite a few people I work with that live in that area and haven't checked in via the work numbers yet.
Snarlin likely took his family out of harm's way - smart guy.

Re: [Ike] Houston TGers: Good luck to you
Snarlin here. Checking in. No power at my house. Traveled to a friends house tonight for my first internet check in since the storm.
We rode it out in SE Houston...about 10 miles North of Nagin. We were all in one room and the entire family slept through the storm once I took the wheel out of the hamster cage.
Lots of limbs down in my yard. No big trees down on my property. Lots of trees down in the neighborhood. Have spent the last 4 days with my chainsaw cutting up trees and limbs.
Generator's going. Just picked up 10 gallons of gas at a nearby service station (20 minute wait). Have friends within 5 miles with power, so have a hot shower when needed.
School district (CCISD) closed indefinitely. Kid's'll be out for 1-2 weeks I'm estimating.
Coleman stove. Generator. Cold beer. Only thing I'm missing is an internet connection and life would be great.

Re: [Ike] Houston TGers: Good luck to you
Glad to hear from you Snarlin. Pictures are great.
BTW in case you haven't picked up the info we aren't supposed to go to work until next Monday unless specifically requested for a critical task.
I'm handling startup reviews via phone and have my laptop.
fyi.

Re: [Ike] Houston TGers: Good luck to you
It sounded like I was in an old freight train. It was my first hurricane. If I new the destruction that was going on just feet from my house I would have lost my marbles. Thank God I couldn't see much with the rain slamming into my windows and the power being down. I can't even imagine the terror the people in Galveston and Bolivar must have felt. I live in SW Houston. I still don't have power but I feel very lucky to have suffered only some downed limbs and a leaky roof. Here are some pics from my back yard and down the street. I started building up my supplies last week but the stores that had power opened the morning after the hurricane. So supplies were never an issue in my area. Over all it feels like someone kicked the crap out of my little brother. I hope my neighbors to the south will have fast recovery.

Re: [Ike] Houston TGers: Good luck to you
Houston's back on track to being "normal" again. Power's coming back to more people and relief efforts are under way. It's a rather depressing sight when FEMA sends supplies to Houston, but never told anyone that they arrived and that we'd have to distribute them ourselves. Our tax dollars at work...
I think we already know about the Baytown/Clear Lake/Seabrook/Surf Side/Bolivar/Galveston situations, so no need to bring them back up. Driving around town, several businesses are still not open and there's still debris everywhere. The University of Houston got thrashed as well. There's one parking lot where nearly all the small trees that were planted there got blown over. It's funny to find a empty parking spot, only to find out it's already occupied by a tree. There's this one grove next to the Psychology building where the trees were already leaning over. Sadly, some of them got uprooted. Several buildings got damaged, especially the Campus Recreation Center and the Architecture building. If my sister or myself can, we'll get some pics of school to post up. A lot of clean up has been done already, but there's some stuff you can't miss.
Again, thanks to everyone who posted in this thread with concern about our predicament.

I could swear I saw that pic with the tree busting out of the sidewalk from Hambergler on Digg....maybe I'm just crazy though....
