Re: acetaminophen vs ibuprofen
Don't forget good old aspirin. Still works in a lot of situations.
I find Acetaminophen to be good for cold, flu, and infection, Ibuprofen for headaches, strain or muscle ache. Tylenol takes a long time to kick in for me, almost twice as long as Advil.
By the way, Ibuprofen taken on an empty stomach (frequently) will put holes in your stomach lining too--always "pad" it with some dairy fat if possible!
I thought Tylenol also blocks some of the pain signals from reaching your brain, whereas Advil doesn't. Is this true?

Re: acetaminophen vs ibuprofen
I've used various different over the counter pain relievers over the years, and I've found that no matter what I use someone always tells me: "Oh, you use Medicine X? That's terrible, it'll totally mess up your Organ Z." This includes doctors. So my conclusion is that everything is going to kill you, so just use whatever you find works best for your pain/fever. :P

I prefer mad dog 20/20. It is a good pain killer, in the proper dosage.
lol.
Seriously, I just use whatever I grab. They all work pretty well.
The worst I've ever had was after my finger surgery. I had to switch between them. I was taking ibuprofen AND acetaminophen. Only way to keep the pain from being so bad. The pain killers they gave me made me dizzy and lupy and I couldn't get out of bed because of that for 2 days."Sympathy means a lot, coming from Kulmar. I didn't think it was possible.
Good luck getting rid of your disease. If you're infected, though, stay away--I can't afford to be a zombie right now.

Re: acetaminophen vs ibuprofen
I stick with ibuprofin. For me tylenol does nothing and I have been told by doctors and pharmecists (one being my father) that comparitivley tylenol is really crap for pain specifically due to Cat's explanation. Also it is used as filler on most narcotic pain medications. If you down a bottle of Vicodin or Percs, the tylenol filler kills you, not the narcotic. As such, if you are taking pain meds you can't take anything else with tylenol in it (if you want to keep your liver), however ibuprofen can give these meds a nice kick. So much so that the addition of ibuprofen to vicodin is it's own pharmecutical "vicoprofen".
Also, it should be noted that they can be taken together and you will find that if your kid has a really bad fever the pediatrican will suggest alternating between ibuprofen and tylenol every two hours to control the fever rather than using just one and waiting the full 4 hours between doses. So both are useful for fevers.
And for God sake, check with your doctor...don't take anyone elses advice. What works for you may not work for others and your doctor knows your circumstances.
