thats awesome. They say that some solar flares hit us so hard that our magnetic field almost collapses. If one hit us hard enough it could disrupt all electronic communications on the planet, like a giant emp wave hitting the whole planet and knock us back into the stone age.

Thats very cool. I remember back in, I believe, 2004, there was a large scale solar impact on our atmosphere that made it possible to see the aurora borealis as far south as tennessee. I was living in pennsylvania at the time and my ex and I went out with some blankets and watched the light show for several hours. It really was something spectacular. I'd like to get to the polar regions at some point in my life to see them in full splendor.

I saw some northern lights in Kansas once... pretty cool.

The next solar max in 2012/2013 will be the most intense on record with northern lights predicted as far south as rome.

Wow... those pictures are stunning. Thank you for posting this, that's provided me with a plethora of now desktop backgrounds! I just set #20 as my background (the purple-ish one with the moon), but I've got #5 reserved for my next desktop.
