Really, just go to your local shooting range and tell them you'd like to rent a pistol and that you've never shot a gun before. They'll be glad to walk you through it. Most of the time, they get repeat customers. Every new shooter I've ever taken to the range has told me that they'd definitely like to do it again. Next time you have $30 and an afternoon to kill, head to the nearest indoor range and have a blast.

That's true, and that's a bridge I'll cross when I come to it. However, I highly doubt I would be carrying mace... that's a bit offensive. Perhaps in which case, I'll just stick with my switchblade.
Interesting that you find a legal tool offensive, but are willing to carry a weapon that is illegal in every state in this country. Do you want to go to jail for a long time?

Wait a second...switchblades are illegal? What if a old lady was just carrying a kitchen steak knife in her purse...would the law ban that as well?

As much as I am for equality of all people, regardless of national origin, race, sex, gender, sexuality, etc... I find a guy carrying mace to be somewhat emasculating. That's what it was referring to.

Blades under 2" are legal in the state of California, though I just did a search and realized they are NOT legal in Michigan. So much for that idea.

Why not carry around a small "stun" gun? They're legal in some states for self-defense. Pretty sure they're legal here in Illinois. Not sure about Chicago's city limits. (Wouldn't be surprised if it's illegal, really wouldn't want us civies defending ourselves...)

Look, I don't know the laws in every state, I just happen to know that switchblades, knives that open at the push of a button, also known as automatic knives, are illegal according to federal law, except to certain people (law enforcement and military, for example). Federal law also restricts the transfer of switchblades across state lines, except for military use. Interestingly, federal law specifically allows one armed men (and women) to carry a switchblade as long as it's under 3" long. Most states have laws restricting the length of blades on knives that you're allowed to carry, which usually prevents little old ladies from keeping an 8" chef's surprise in their purses.

That said, if the switchblade was manufactured entirely within your state, I suppose that it might be legal if your state's laws allow it.

Oh, and I carry pepper spray around with me all the time and I still feel very manly.

Re: Do you like firearms?

He is right about switchblades being against the law. Though a lot of people get the Stiletto mixed up with the Switchblade. The difference is the Stiletto opens from the side with the push of a button while the switchblade pops out the middle. Stilettos are legal in most states that I am aware.

Back to the firearrms though, if you ever go through the class to get a carry permit one of the things you will learn is that your obligation is to try and never use your weapon. You must try your best to avoid bad situations and run away if you can. You should only use deadly force when it is your absolute last resort.

I am glad to see you taking the matter serious because it is serious business as firearms are a huge responsibility. Good luck in your learning and I hope you come to enjoy and appriciate the range.

Wha? No!

OK, let's look at the all knowing wikipedia for some basic common sense education:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stiletto

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Switchblade

And there you have a chart with state laws that will tell you if you can carry a switchblade that was manufactured entirely within your state, too!

Re: Do you like firearms?

That is really interesting because it is very different than what I have been taught all my life and different than when you look for Stilettos for sale, most are "spring loaded". Perhaps it is because of my being from Virginia and now Tennessee where the laws and I guess naming conventions are different.

When I was younger the law was as explained to me by the Police that a switchblade which popped open from the middle was what was illegal and not the stilettos that open from the side with the push of a button.

Just doing a quick search on Amazon.com brings up a ton of spring loaded stilettos which from brief looking over, does not call them switchblades. IMO the wiki article is a bit misleading and incomplete.

In AZ we can have any type of knife we please, including out-the-front switchblades. Most if not all are NOT manufactured here.

AFAIK, shipping switchblades into AZ for Joe Schmoe to buy would violate federal law.

But, hey, this was a nice hijack. How 'bout them Tshirts?

I think the first one I'm going to get will be this one:

Wait, I see an order form entry for "Black Blood of Tyrants" shirt, but there's no image. If that Tshirt contains the entire quote; "The tree of liberty must be watered periodically with the blood of tyrants and patriots alike. It is its natural manure." - Thomas Jefferson, and if it looks as nice as the other Tom Jefferson shirt, I'll be getting it instead.

And an even larger quote to provoke more discussion:
"God forbid we should ever be twenty years without such a rebellion.
The people cannot be all, and always, well informed. The part which is
wrong will be discontented, in proportion to the importance of the facts
they misconceive. If they remain quiet under such misconceptions,
it is lethargy, the forerunner of death to the public liberty. ...
And what country can preserve its liberties, if it's rulers are not
warned from time to time, that this people preserve the spirit of
resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as
to the facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost
in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from
time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
It is its natural manure."

They are sold at just about every sports store in the state....

It's interesting that so many retailers have them in stock, yet it's illegal to do so?

Nice shirt too!

For those of you who think Mace/OC/Pepper Spray is not manly, I challenge you to get sprayed by it. That is the most vile experience I have ever had in my life, I think I would prefer being shot or stabbed (depending on location) than getting sprayed again.

Right, it's perfectly legal to ship them into AZ for military or other government use, such as law enforcement.

Keep in mind there are many federal laws that aren't enforced by states. Just look at California and its medicinal marijuana laws.
