BREAKING NEWS: Adults Play Video Games!
Here is the Link to the PDF:

Two days ago, the Pew Internet and American Life Project released a report that details the (apparently shocking) phenomenon that about half of American adults play videogames (53%, to be exact). Sounds about right to me, though I just skimmed through a good dozen articles from all over the net that are making it sound like this is some big news. I agree with this Forbes blogger in that it isn’t the numbers that are surprising but how surprised everyone seems to be about them (must be that other 47%). It just goes to show how little understood gaming really is outside of itself.
After all, gaming permeates our culture. Look at Nintendo’s latest ad campaign. Gaming isn’t just for geeks anymore–Carrie Underwood plays Nintendogs! However, the problem, I think, is that this survey doesn’t differentiate between “gamers” and “people who play videogames.” At least, most of the reports on it aren’t. I mean, my mom plays Solitaire constantly on her iPhone, and so she fits into that 53%, but I would never in a million years refer to her as a “gamer.” I think the other 47% are seeing the headline “MORE THAN HALF OF AMERICANS ARE GAMERS” and picturing the other half of the country locked in their basements playing Halo and World of Warcraft.
There were a couple of detailed findings from the survey that I found interesting. For example, older adults (65+) who play games are about 10% more likely to play every day than younger people. Also, college graduates are about 20% more likely to play videogames than those without a high school diploma (the research specialist at Pew says that there’s no obvious reason for this one, but it seems to me that income level might be a skewing factor). And a score for recognition of girl gamers–50% of women play versus 55% of men.
Right now, age is the biggest demographic factor. Nearly every teenager plays videogames (97%) versus 81% of those 18-29 (that’s my box!) and 23% of the senior crowd (65+). My prediction is that this difference will just continue to flatten over time, as it’s more an issue of culture than circumstance. By the time digital natives (those born after 1980) are seniors, I suspect that most of us will be spending our retirements playing whatever the future equivalent of World of Warcraft is (I’m hoping for a metaverse myself).

I am going to read this to see what they came up with in 9 pages, and if the researchers themselves are now going to play video games.
I think many of us can relate to this article and many of us are not surprised especially with the teenager response, this story is exactly why i am for kids/teenagers playing outside more!!!
I'll see some of you on the PR Server this evening.Last edited by Delta*RandyShugart*; 12-10-2008 at 05:56 PM. Reason: forgot to include website link

Well, for the going outside, my computer doesn't have a waterproof shield...
But the numbers on girl gamers surprised me! I guess not that many of us have made it to TG yet.

Wait, you mean that this whole age thing has implications associated with it? There goes any plans I had to mimic Peter Pan.

Silly rabbit, video games are for kids. Guess they try to imply that to a lot of things instead of just cereal.

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Adults Play Video Games!
I just read this article, and its a goody!
Study: Games Boost Brainpower in Elderly

A recently published study conducted by the University of Illinois psychology department finds that time spent playing videogames actually improves the mental prowess of older people.
After submitting a group of older people (specifically, 40 60+ year olds) to almost 24 hours of Big Huge Games' real-time strategy title Rise of Nations, the group exhibited notable improvements in a number of cognitive tests.
"As a group, the gamers became significantly better -- and faster -- at switching between tasks as compared to the comparison group," the study reports.
"Their working memory, as reflected in the tests, was also significantly improved. Their reasoning ability was enhanced. To a lesser extent, their short-term memory of visual cues was better than that of their peers, as was their ability to identify rotated objects."

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Adults Play Video Games!
As you shop for a home for your aging parents, are you checking for the availability of a good Internet connection?
When I was a kid getting my tonsils out (about '68) the shared hospital room had a color TV (woot!) with lousy signal. This was the age of rabbit ears. The TV in my sister's room last year wasn't much better. When will hospitals come equipped with ISP services? If I get hospitalized, I'm going to feel cut off without my email, TG forums, and WoW dailies.Dude, seriously, WHAT handkerchief?

Randy is that pic AOE III with an expansion pack? I find this study completely useless, whats the point in proving something we already know?

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Adults Play Video Games!
I agree with Fighter on the study being kind of pointless. I'm not entirely surprised that adults play video games, especially the 18-29 range. I play videogames, especially FPS games on PC, to do something productive, have a good time with other fellow players, as well as finding newer people to talk to.
Coffee is rather like life. It can often be bitter, yet robust the more older you get. But that really depends on how you make of life as your own slips by.
