My wife and I took our kid to see Speed Racer. It was too loud and slow at times and he didn't seem to enjoy it much. But I plop him in front of Transformers for a bit while I take care of some things... and he's engrossed. He's watched every episode of the original tv series that I bought online, and loves the new animated show and old cartoon movie as well.

It's not a movie that I think is realistically violent. I wouldn't take him to say, a remake of Night of the Living Dead... or Max Payne... or any number of dark sadistic and violent films. But he knows that Transformers are not real, but cool none the less. Allowing him to watch it is far from epic fail.

Now as I said I wouldn't take him to the theater. The big sounds, dark room, and the possibility of he making way too much noise for everyone else to hear means no visit to the theater. Likewise, I wouldn't expect any other parent to bring small kids to movies like this. I was appalled when people had there 1-4 year olds in Dark Knight. :\

But...

Transformers were big in the 80's no reason for kids born in the 21st century to be at a movie theater watching them on the big movie screen.

... exactly how old do you think the majority of the people were watching that original tv show? lol I'd say about 8 - 15.
