Re: Official Drink of 2009 Contest!!
I guess I can finally post my mojito recipe now too, as it passed its "sea trials" this weekend with flying colors

Code:1 Package of mint (maybe 40 leaves or so?) 4 limes, juiced 1c. simple syrup (1c. sugar + 1/2c. water, melted together on stovetop) 2c. white/light rum 4c. soda water Directions: Add mint leaves and a splash of the syrup to pitcher. Muddle leaves to maximize flavor. Combine rest of ingredients. Stir lightly. To serve, fill glass with ice, then pour mojito over it.

Re: Official Drink of 2009 Contest!!
I just came up with something the other day that I thought was pretty brilliant.
Now, I love me some White Russians but I'm lactose-intolerant, so milk is not a good idea. So I substituted it with vanilla Ensure. Pretty good, kind of like a milkshake.
A similar alternative is to make a normal White Russian - milk, Kahlua, vodka - but use Absolut Vanilla (or some other vanilla-flavored vodka). Another drink to make is to get rid of the milk and use just Kahlua and Absolut Vanilla as a mixed shot.

+10 pts to you for finding a good use for champagne! The best thing is that just about everyone I know (it turns out) has a bottle of champagne somewhere in their house that they are more than happy to donate to the cause!! Who knew?!

Re: Official Drink of 2009 Contest!!
Just made a batch of Skittles using the crazy core skittles, so there will be a slight mix of flavors. Unfortunately, the green came out a very unpleasant brown, but it'll taste great I bet. I still have to wait and filter out the wax, so they all look quite chalky.

Something else to try that tastes like pure summertime: sliced pineapple soaked in tequila. I put some pineapple slices to soak in Jose Cuervo silver, and a few hours later you have a delicious treat!

Re: Official Drink of 2009 Contest!!
love the mojito recipe! - its missing one thing, however. A truly authentic mojito is garnished with a sugar cane stirring stick (you won't find that tidbit it most recipes b/c its technically not a part of the recipe), sucking on the stirrer is an added sweet treat!
for a delicious alternative, try making it with dark rum and/or using raw sugar instead of syrup!I got yer Dancing With the F**&ing Stars right here!!

Re: Official Drink of 2009 Contest!!
I also tried it this weekend. V e r y nice. For the 2nd and 3rd pitchers I put the muddled leaves in a tea ball. While it cut out the popeye look, it definitely reduced the minty taste. I'll be looking for alternate strainer methods.
Also a nice tip... had some family members over that don't drink, so I put a little extra club soda in and left the rum out of the pitcher... then mixed rum in by the glass to match the drinker's taste.

Given that TG is an older audience, the ice in our drinks might look like this:

By Freds, available from BevMo.

They also carry ice molds to make luxury liners, so you can have a "Gin and Titonic".

Re: Official Drink of 2009 Contest!!
I just checked my receipt and the denture "smiles" were $6. The tray makes 4 at a time. The hardest part is filling it without spilling water all over the kitchen. Best bet is to set the tray in the freezer and bring a pitcher of water to it to top it off. (I fill it from my Alhambra dispenser's cold water tap, so it freezes pretty quickly.)
My mom's been staying with my brother for a few months after a bout of pneumonia put her in the hospital. She moved back home yesterday and I left a few of those in the freezer for her gin martini. She said she really enjoyed the surprise.Dude, seriously, WHAT handkerchief?

Re: Official Drink of 2009 Contest!!
Gentlemen, since we're getting on toward wintertime (it's snowing like crazy as I type this), I thought I'd share my recipe for Hot Buttered Rum. If you're looking for a concoction to drink while cozied up by a crackling fire or sitting in a hot tub under falling snow**, this is your ticket. However, this recipe does require some time for the flavors to blossom right, so be patient.
Hot Buttered Rum:
-Recipe serves 8 decent sized servings, i can give you a smaller breakdown if you want it-
2 cups brown sugar
1/2 cup butter
1 pinch salt
2 quarts hot apple cider (cold cider is fine, microwave or stovetop heat it)
3 cinnamon sticks
6 whole cloves
2 cups rum
1 cup sweetened whipped cream
1/4-1/2 tsp fresh ground nutmeg (to taste)
-Combine the brown sugar, butter, salt and hot water in 5 quart slow cooker. Add cinnamon sticks, a pinch of nutmeg and cloves. Cover and cook on Low for 5 hours. Stir in rum.
-Ladle from the slow cooker into mugs, and top with whipped cream and a dusting of nutmeg.
**Warning: as a health care professional, I am obligated to advise that drinking alcoholic beverages while in a hot tub can lead to increased levels of intoxication and the subsequent negative side effects (up to and including DEATH...and no, I'm not kidding). Be smart and know your limits.

Re: Official Drink of 2009 Contest!!
Not being much of a drinker, I'm inspired to try a reduction of your recipe to caramelize some pecans. My current recipe is just to melt some butter and brown sugar over the top of pecans spread out on a small baking sheet in the toaster oven, and serve warm. But the other ingredients you list sound like nice additions.
