Zone of the Enders 2nd runner was number 3 on my list and yes strong contender for first. Also Virtual on is on Xbox Live Arcade now and you can choose console controles or twin stick. Enjoy!

hey Jevski,
that's not mechforce, that's my remake of mechforce. and if you're gonna hotlink the images, you could at least include link to my site - where you can download my remake including source code. unfortunately i cannot do it myself since this is my first post to this board.

As would I, all i'm saying here though is that the controller for this got me thinking, Why the hell aren't more games like this? I would love to see something like this, it would mean that those of us who don't use a K+M could play highly detail intensive games such as IL2 without dumbing down of any sort. The keyboard and mouse are excellent, but they're not, I repeat NOT a requirement for a game to be good.

Re: Favorite mech game ofall time
I've only played Steel Battalion like twice, at a friends house, but the sheer immersion factor of that complex peripheral controller cannot be denied. That thing was awesome. Before even fighting any enemies, simply figuring out how to walk around as a mech was already awesome.
Besides that, I had an old DOS game called battledrome or something like that where you challenged other mech pilots to arena matches. The goal was to make money (to buy better mechs and guns) and improve your league ranking (which would unlock the bigger size-classes of mechs). If you lost a match, the game wasn't over, but you had to pay money to repair your mech before signing up for your next match -- and the game would auto-save at the end of the fight to prevent you from just re-trying. If you ran out of money for repairs, you lost, and if you got your league ranking to #1, you won. That was a pretty fun game too.
I'm not entirely sure I've played any other mech games -- I guess VirtualOn counts. How about playing Starcraft and building lots of Terran Goliaths?
Edit: Found it, it was Battledrome, from the same people who made Earthseige. Apparently it was designed to be played as a multiplayer game, but I didn't know anyone else who owned the game, so I just played singleplayer mode.

True enough. It's a shame simulation games have been on a downswing the last few years. Coming up with a sort of keyboard/joystick/throttle controller with a USB interface would be pretty neat.

I wish I could remember that one game I once rented for the GameCube way back when.. You could turn into a submarine though.

Cyberstrike 2. The teamplay aspect in that was as great as almost any other game I've played. That said, the single player was terrible, and it didn't get played by many people for a variety of reasons.

Re: Favorite mech game ofall time
So Steel Battalion and Mechwarrior 2 are fun and all. BUT they are SLOW. Armored Core was nice but the control scheme sucked. Zone of the Enders: Second Runner was fast but single player. So whats the answer...
EXTEEL is FAST and MULTIPLAYER and FREE. Plus it has a simple yet nice control scheme!
What was that again? FREE
Exteel is a Free to Play third person shooter/MMO
Yep Exteel is just over a year and a half old. You can customize your mech and fight in arenas. Think Counter Strike with an RPG element (meaning you enter a map like counter strike but set up your character in the search for game/server menu).
The game is very fast and includes multiple modes like Capture the Flag and Team Deathmatch
Mech customization is pretty deep and you get 4 skills to use in game. (more on this to come)
Like every free MMO online it is the Micro Transaction Model.
So what are you waiting for? FREE I said.
Look for a more detailed write up in the future when i play more then the Tutorial and one round.
The game speed makes you feel more like a Gundam then a Mech (mobile tank).
Sign up and Download:

Micro Transaction =/= Free
The idea behind micro-transaction MMOs is that anyone can play the game without paying, but certain features of the game will be restricted to paying customers. Depending on the game in question, those paid features might just be cosmetic / convenience features, but most often they will have a significant impact on gameplay so that you aren't really getting the full game unless you hand over some money. Often in multiplayer the paid customers will have access to some advantage that is unavailable to the free clients, so you'll find yourself losing frequently to the people with more powerful upgraded accounts. In order to have a fair fight your opponent has to have the same paid/not paid status as you do.
That said I have no idea which features are paid-only for this particular game.

Um you can still play the game for FREE which means its FREE. Just b/c you can't be the best or someone can pay to be better does not mean its not FREE.
With that said thank you for stating the obvious when I say that the game is a Micro transaction buisness model, The detail of your post being implied by the definition of a Micro transaction buisness model.
PS I have spent no money and have a positive k/d ratio. The game puts a good amount of emphasis on skill/twitch play. BUT again your right you can Pay for better equipment which =/= good player btw.
PPS. I love the Avatar! First and last boss of Final Fantasy (NES) what was his name again? I want to say Ganton but i think thats wrong.

Garland. When he became the last boss he transformed into Chaos.

Yep, and I found it available for download here, with the Red Odyssey expansion (where the Chinese join the fight).
http://www.battlezone1.net/
General info on the game here:

I downloaded it last night and played the first mission. I'm very rusty, but couldn't withstand the wave of nostalgia. Pretty good for a game that's 11 years old.
