If you look at the Wikipedia link I posted earlier, you'll see that it used to be THE way to write in business, because it was more readable. That's why training was so critical. You had to learn how to do it the
right way for it to be useful in business communications. With typography handled by computers, you now see a similar emphasis on the next most important aspect of readability, grammar and spelling. If you send me a resume with grammar and spelling errors, it goes on the slush pile. Before computers and typewriters, the same would be the case with poor penmanship.
