then I suggest you do two things as a regular habit
1) whenever you log on goto the TG L4D group and see who is playing (by the green box around them) Click on the person in green, goto their page and add them as a friend. This way you will be adding all the TG who play L4D the times when you are on. The first time you do this you may have to spend half an hour adding people but its worth the time to get your friends list off to a good start (may be quicker through internet explorer , rather than the steam browser)
2) during games you can goto overlay and click friends, then add friends button, then there are tabs for current game and previous games, this way you can add people who you liked in games you played

If you do these two habits for a few weeks then you will get yourself into a good position where when you log on you have friends to play with
