I watched it yesterday and approved greatly of it.
He was told that he should not kill, and he did not kill, until he got into the Army. Then he was told to kill, and he killed.

Re: District 9
I saw it earlier today and it was not what I expected from the trailers. I thought it was a great movie. I do have one question though. How did the humans and aliens understand each other? They never really explained that.

Re: District 9
So I am here at work, and am watching a "trailer" of District 9, already I have come to the realization of several things:
I realize why the film takes place and was shot in Johannesburg South Africa:
1. Since crime is a serious problem, it won't be affected that much by aliens who decided to set up shop.
2. Apartheid, this was one of the major epicenters of apartheid, and well, no better place to film a movie based upon racism and diversity of cultures.
3. Weather, its warm climate and radical surfing waves could make any alien both foreign and domestic happy.
4. Tax break on filming? Though I suspect there is some cgi, even though I know magnacentipede will all point fingers at us and tell us how he knew that aliens do exist, but I get the feeling there is some CGI, not sure where.......Randy = Ace ! - Warlab

Re: District 9
Went and saw District 9 over the weekend.
This is has to be one the best scifi movies I have seen in a long time.
Great story. Solid acting. Realistic, but not over done CGI. Actual character development for most of the characters. And, as one reviewer put it. Pant-shiating cool weapons.
It does follow the same kind of filming as Cloverfield. There is shakey cam, but it is more documentary style than it is amateur cam style. It also is kind of like Cloverfield in that the audience knows only what the characters know. There is no scientist who appears halfway through the movie and explains things to you. You will be left with questions, but they don't take away from the story.
And then there is the weapons. Holy hell are these things cool. A friend of mine hopes they put out a video game with the weapons to use. Force weapons, lightning guns, projectile weapons. They are just cool. Then of course the power suit comes out and takes it up another step.
What really makes this movie really good is that it actually treats the audience as if it has a brain. It has cool weapons and explosions, it has CGI aliens and spaceships, but unlike many of the movies out lately, you don't have to turn off your brain to enjoy them. So go see it at your first opportunity, you won't regret it.

Here's a Q&A from director Neill Blomkamp. A couple of spoiler questions are posed at the bottom of the list.

Re: District 9
From the trailer I got the impression this would be a variation on Alien Nation. Not so? (I probably won't get to see it until it hits DVD or cable.)

Re: District 9
No, not like Alien Nation. Initial premise is similar, but then goes in an entirely different direction.

Re: District 9
I thought this movie was excellent. Time-honoured theme, classic story, but told in a very fresh and intelligent way.
Aside from the well-told story the effects, action, production, etc. were all top notch. I highly recommend it.
I will be seeing it again. It kinda had a "Half-life" feel to me as well in some ways...
Cheers,

Re: District 9
I agree it was... different, than I expected, but still a very good/interesting movie.
