Re: Lack of dedicated servers and gaming
I have one problem with this. There were 9 million that bought CoD4 (did a quick google and was what I came up with), 200k (if it gets that high) is not really going to bother IW that much I'm afraid.
If people are becoming so bored when playing that they have to resort to this immature behaviour I will give them something to do, call it a project. The project is "appeal a ban". - Wicks

Re: Lack of dedicated servers and gaming
I have signed the petition as well, I don't remember what number I was.. 40k or so.
We have been discussing and ranting about this subject in the CoD forums since the news broke. Here and here.
The second link is in response to fourzerotwo's (IW's community manager) extremely condecending and patronizing post on his blog. Beware, the comments section is NSFW.
I sincerely hope that we PC gamers that are outraged by this, are able to make a financial impact on IW. Don't just say you aren't going to buy this game. Seriously, DON'T buy this game!

You make a good point. But we had a saying in retail - for every unhappy customer that actually said something there's probably 10 more that did not and will just shop somewhere else.
I believe that IW has made up their mind and it's doubtful this will change their position but it doesn't hurt to try.

How did I not know about this? Petition signed.
In any event, they will make so much money off the console versions that they could probably care less about PC gamers at this point.

Re: Lack of dedicated servers and gaming
Using Drona's numbers and the projected number of signers, hard to believe anyone could ignore $120,000,000 in sales.

Re: Lack of dedicated servers and gaming
Like I stated earlier, I find this upsetting. However, I don't think that PC gamers have the efficacy to change this situation. You can look at the last bit petition thing, L4D2. Valve responded, and created "Crash Course." It was a simple and painless add-on from Valve that pleased the PC gamers. Look at StarCraft II and LAN, it has essentially been blown off.
When I see this MW2 issue, it seems to be already ingrained so far into the game that it will take a big change of heart for Activision to change anything so fundamental so close to release. If we were in for a L4D type match making, there were ways around that; people still accessed the server browser and connected directly to servers. But it looks like we are in for a full transition into "console" like gaming. It's the dislike of this handling of such that drove me personally to PC gaming.
Maybe I'm pessimistic, maybe I'm cynical, maybe I just have four tests tomorrow, but I don't see this hurting MW2 one bit. Many people will still buy it for PC, many more will buy it on consoles. I dearly hope that these issues are a stone kicked up on the road of gaming into the windshields of companies like this. Hopefully, the next bump in the road will cause a major crack and the entire pane will have to be replaced...

Re: Lack of dedicated servers and gaming
This is a money issues pure and simple. AAA PC games require a lot more quality assurance, beta testing, patching, etc. AAA Consoles are about the same cost to to build as a PC game but can then be easily ported over for extra cash. This won't stop here. Ultimately the consumer will either have to buy something else, or build something else as the larger companies will continue to go after the larger console market.

Signed. Their sales are going to suffer terribly and they're going to blame it on piracy. Whatever.

Re: Lack of dedicated servers and gaming
The difference between the L4D2 situation and what's going on with MW2 is, the L4D2 "boycott" was one of principle. "You're not giving us enough of what we like, so we're not buying the next thing."
The problem IW/Activision might find with this uproar is that it's a practical problem. "You're leaving out a fundamental feature of the game that I want, therefore I have no reason to buy it." Certainly it will be a huge seller, but there will be a lot of people who sit this one out on PC."No bastard ever won a war by dying for his country.

Re: Lack of dedicated servers and gaming
Does anyone remember the controversy surrounding "ranked servers" in BF2, and what a dramatic change that represented in the server provider community compared to previous games?

Re: Lack of dedicated servers and gaming
I am a bit confused. With a lack of dedicated servers, will the multiplayer be closer to an Xbox game?
