    MRE Question

    OK Military folk - Question.

Why isn't important. In Acquiring MRE's as a civilian, are they an available standard in commissary stateside?

The few on base commissaries I've been to have had them, only most don't seem to include the heating tablets. But, IMO, they taste better cold.

Also most surplus stores sell them. I know it's an hour or so drive for you p8riot, but the surplus store on ashley in downtown tampa has them.

However, given my druthers, I'd order them online, at least then you get to pick and choose which meals you get (which is a huge bonus, because some MREs REALLY suck.)

Going up to MacDill? You can probably call them. I know they used to have them at both the commissary and the exchange, but I dont know anymore. Last time I bought MREs there was when I was like 15 (over a decade ago).

MacDill certainly would have a commissary.

They might be at the exchange, but not at the commissary.

They would certainly be cheaper and fresher if purchased online, though.

Thats not 100% true, they are at the commissary here, and atleast in the commissary you can see the exp date before you buy.

Of course MacDill has a commissary, it's right next door to the exchange and class six. Just because I havent bought MREs there in 15 years doesnt mean I didnt shop there for other things.

They have come a LONG way in ten to fifteen years. You should see all of the combination and new meals they are adding. The MRE test lab is based out of my state and often times they invite the public out to sample the new offerings.

An MRE is far superior to the "other" options back in the 'ol days. Tin can rations anyone?

    Re: MRE Question

The tin can sponge cake was actually quite tasty. But as far as MREs go, while they may have added options and improved some of them, stay the hell away from chicken a la king. It's still horrible.
