Lateral Thinking Puzzle #2 - Hotel Theif [solved]

    INTRODUCTION
Lateral Thinking Puzzles, unlike most puzzles, are inexact. In a sense, they are a hybrid between puzzles and storytelling. In each puzzle, some clues to a scenario are given, but the clues do not tell the full story. Your job is to fill in the details and complete the story. There could be more than one solution to any given puzzle, but generally only one explanation is truly satisfying.
    RULES
You fill in the details to complete the story by asking "Yes / No" questions about the story. My response to your "Yes and No" questions will be one of the following: yes, no, or irrelevant. Sometimes the response may be "simplify your question", if your question is too complicated to answer with a single yes or no.

You will be tempted to use google. DO NOT. It will be unsatisfying for you and everyone else. Hints may be provided by me, if everyone seems to have hit a roadblock. Good luck and have fun!

Warning: For some reason, these puzzles have a tendency to be rather morbid.
    The Puzzle

A woman was in her hotel room watching TV when she heard a knock at the door. Through the peek-hole in the door, she saw a man that she didn't recognize. Upon asking who it was, the man apologized for the interruption; saying that he'd mistook her hotel room for his own. She then watched him walk down the hall and get on the elevator. The woman immediately phoned the reception desk to report the man; she knew he was a thief.

    Hints

    Solution
The woman reasoned that the man would not have knocked before entering his own room. He knocked to check if anyone was in the room before entering with a stolen key and burglaring the room.

Celestial PM'd asking for clarification: It doesn't matter what kind of door locks the rooms have.

    Re: Lateral Thinking Puzzle #2

    Answer:
If he wasn't dressed as a hotel employee and he knocked on a room door in a hotel the most likely reason would be to check if someone was inside before breaking in to steal something. Coupled with heading immediately for the exit (and not the next room over) makes that even more suspicious. If he thought it was his room he would have tried to use a key, not knock.
Just because everyone does something does not mean that it is right to do.

Was she just one of those paranoid ladies that "knows" things without having any evidence whatsoever?
