The last US First World War veteran has died at the age
The last US First World War veteran has died at the age of 110. Frank Woodruff Buckles was also the oldest surviving veteran of the Great War. Frank Buckles was civilian POW of the Japanese during WW II and was rescued by the raid at Los Banos (Philippines) in the early morning of Fed 23, 1945.
His wish to be buried at Arlington National Cemetery required Presidential permission from George W. Bush in 2008 (as he did not meet the current criteria for burial). All requests to the Arlington staff, the military, various Senators and Congressmen led nowhere till a relative contacted Ross Perot (1992/1996 Presidential Candidate). Permission came about two weeks later.
