Star Wars: Battlefront -- how many among us?

I'm thinking about purchasing Star Wars: Battlefront, as I've enjoyed every LucasArts title I've played (I've only played a handful).

--
I've already written this entire post, but I'll write a summary here: the review doesn't make the game sound too great, but then neither does Counter-Strike unless I'm playing it with you fools. So, are people here going to (are they already?) play this title?
--

I'm reading an Ars Technica review of the game. It claims that the single player action isn't the best, but I'm less concerned about the single player aspect than I am about the multiplayer, and everyone I know who has personally shown enthusiasm about their experience about the game (a surprisingly high number of people, hence my interest in the game at all) has said the single player action is very entertaining.

The review details several complaints it has with the game, not including multiplayer design, and then offers this:

Quote:
A lot of these problems are alleviated with human opponents. The online play is very well done, easy to get into, and can be incredibly intense. Once a human player sees the AT-AT lumbering towards him he’s going to jump into the snowspeeder with a friend with the goal to take that guy out ASAP. I jumped onto a server with a friend and taking down an AT-AT using the tow cable is one of the best gaming moments I’ve had this year. It’s pure adrenaline to see the big lumbering death machine stumble and fall into the snow.
And then later this...

Quote:
Unfortunatly, like with any online game of this sort you find good servers and bad servers. It helps immensely to have a few friends with this game before playing, so you can hit a server and have some teammates you know and trust. Like any multiplayer game, griefers and twelve year olds are going to be a problem.
I also found this very interesting:

Quote:
I also have played the Xbox version of this title, and multiplayer for the Xbox version is much, much better. There is a very simple reason for this, and it’s a large part of what needs to change with PC-based multiplayer gaming.

When you buy the Xbox LIVE kit to bring your console online, you get the headset that allows for speech between players on the service. Think about this for a second. That means that almost every player on Xbox LIVE is online with a headset, and voice chat is included in every single game. It’s not an option, not a feature, it’s standard. That means you’ll almost never join a game where everyone isn’t chatting about strategy with the other players. Contrast this with the PC version, where I’m not talking to a single one of my teammates unless we’re making ourselves sitting ducks by typing.
(should this be the breakout title for XBox at Tactical Gamer?)

This brings me to my main concern: how many Tactical Gamer players have this title or plan on getting it? I could imagine me enjoying the graphics and audio of an entertaining game while bringing teamwork and tactics to a game which sorely needs it.

Talking again about the difference between typed communication and voice communications:

Quote:
This needs to change, and it needs to change now. The difference between the two experiences is startling. On Xbox LIVE the team play was amazingly cohesive, and idiots were quickly kicked from the servers and the vehicles were used intelligently and effectively. Contrast this with the PC servers, where everyone camped the vehicles, there was little team play, and very few people typed out strategies. The difference is striking and immediate.

I have no clue why PC gaming hasn’t caught on with the whole voice chat thing. Sure, you can download third-party apps like Roger Wilco or TeamSpeak but the implementation on the server side leaves a lot to be desired. PC developers need to start including voice chat in their games now, and PC gamers need to get up off their butts and buy at least a passable headset. Trust me, it’s worth it.
So anyway, speak up. How many are interested in this title?

Apophis: I haven't seen anyone say that SM's are better than non-SMs. Nordbomber: This is THE first server I've seen where either side can comeback from out of seemingly nowhere with the right teamwork. en4rcment: I have NEVER experienced the type of gameplay that I have found here. Nightly I am amazed at the personalities and gaming talent. Root: Welcome to TG. Feel free to punctuate your sentences correctly. USe the damn force Wizzie, I'm definitely in for this!!

I only have a PC though, obviously the reviewer you quoted has never heard of VOIP progs. I know very little about the game but I'm a big star wars fan and the idea of taking on AT-AT's with a snow speeder sound great. I'll fly pilot or gunner, but if I'm gunner, I don't wanna end up like Dak...

oooh - did they ever get him out?

Actually, the author does reference Roger Wilco and Teamspeak, but his emphasis is on the power of a standard. It's why Natural Selection works so well out of the box and Joint Ops requires so much effort to make work "right."

Games need voice included in them. It just makes things simpler.

Re: Star Wars: Battlefront -- how many among us?

I'm playing the single player right now (installed it from a friends copy to see if I wanted to buy it or not, which means I can't play multiplayer right now, but if I decide to buy it I'll be all over the multiplayer).

The gameplay itself is very Battlefield 1942 style, with command points and spawn counts etc. The single player, as you mentioned, sucks. It's only a series of games in a theme (there are actually 2 or 3 campaigns) that are themed along the starwars movies, one being the clone wars, the other being the rebels vs empire. Between the skirmishes they have cutscenes from the movies introducing the fight that you're about to be in. Some of the fights are actually fights that were faught in the movies, some of them are fights that would have happened, but weren't shown in the movies. But in all cases, it's you, and a ton of bots, making about 30 players per team... and you just fight it out.

The game itself is pretty decent, you get to use your A-wing to tie the ropes around the AT-AT's legs to kill it, etc, and you can fight in Y-wings and X-wings in cloud city, which was pretty cool as well, but the style of play for single player is basically a themed series of multiplayer play, but against all bots.

I'm still undecided on if I want to purchase this or not... it is pretty nice graphically (once I fixed my texture problem... had to turn the quality all the way down, play game, then turn it back up before my textures were functioning properly) and my friend says that the multiplayer is cool as long as you don't have idiots (which is true for all games these days).

I guess it will depend on how much it costs in the store vs how much cash I have after the christmas shopping etc is done.

If the PC version of this game is hosted here, I'll get a copy.

Talking Re: Star Wars: Battlefront -- how many among us?

I have the game had it since it first came out I love it. PC version of course. I don't have X Box live and don't plan on getting it anytime soon. I do agree wit that reviewer whole heartedly about the voicechat option. Splinter Cell Pandora Tommarow which I recommned anyone should get if they can for the PC had freaking voicechat right out of the box it was great. Its alot easier to organize when you have a mic. I wonder what holds back PC devs from put voice chat in there games. THere is only one teambased game I can think of that didn't need voice chat because it had voice commands and that was RTCW and ET. The voice commands were so well done iyou almost don't need a mic unless your in a clan match. BTW any one around here have SC Pandora Tommarow for the PC maybe we could get some games going?

Ooo and as for Battlefront its a pretty good game the multiplayer is fun you just need a game where people kno what they are doing. However it might seem alittle unbalanced at first because well Imperial and Republican walkers own you. But that can be countered by teamwork and in the case of the Rebels the snowspeeder (or airspeeder depending on the enviorment). Yeah I am a Star Wars nerd.

Re: Star Wars: Battlefront -- how many among us?

I've heard good things about it. My friend described it as Star Wars meets Ghost Recon. If it ends up getting hosted here, I'm very likely to pick it up.

Re: Star Wars: Battlefront -- how many among us?

I've heard mixed things about it, but I still love the idea of a Star Wars -meets- Battlefield:1942/Vietnam type of game. I have no expectations for this being a very smart shooter, ala Ghost Recon, or Operation Flashpoint. But it's *Star Wars*... it just has to be fun!

If this game develops a following here, and a server seems possible, I'll try and raise the fund$ for a copy.
