There are two kinds of ISDN... perhaps therein lies your boggle.

128k ISDN is 2x64k lines

one thing with UK ISDN is you pay per month for the LINES (you do get the 2), then you have to pay for an ISP too, so add another £15 on that... and most isp's only support 64k.......

I was a support tech for US Robotics ISDN modems for 2 years and the implementation varies location. A Standard ISDN line is made up of 3 channels 2 64K BRI Channels and a 16K Data Channel. SO the Standard ISDN is 128K if you are correctly sincing both channels. some telco's only offer 1 64K channel and some offer 2 for some business some offer 64 64k channels depends on your usage.

Quite often if your telco gives your 128K your ISP will only allow 1 64K connection. Earthlink changed from offering 128k to only 64k connection and pissed off a lot of customers.

Compared to broadband like cable or DSL ISDN is more expensive but sometimes if it's all you got you use it anyhow. Most of the people I supported either lived in rural areas where there was no broadband or their companies paid for their ISDN line for them to work from home.

I know the ISDN switches are usually different in Europe but it is like you says if your ISP will only go to 64K then it may not be worth it but remember that the 64K is digital quality not analog. which means you are not going to connect sometimes at 44K and sometimes at 50k and your speed is not going to drop to 33.6k in the background because you have a cheap modem that only reports the initial connect speed then drops the speed to compensate for all the noise on your line. Most areas that are rural enough not to have broadband also have old crappy phone lines limiting you to 33.6k or even 28.8k anyhow. 64K nearly twice as good as 33.6

He's a ForumNecromancer.
Does ISDN still exist? I mean besides in Nebraska.
Sheesh, why am I posting here?
Well, at least it's boosting my post-count. That raises my self-esteem.
