Ahhhh...Great Mistakes, IL. Fond memories.
A few pointers from someone who went through there recently (myself).... 1: Ingrain this into your head....the number "0" is not "oh". It's ZERO. If you have a social security number with 0 in it, say ZERO. They'll get your ass right off the bus in Processing for that. 2: Processing/P-Days suck. But honestly, that's about the worst it gets. After your division is "commisioned", and your guidon is unfurled, it progressively gets easier. 3: If you had ROTC in HS, any marching experience, and any band experience, let them know when they ask in the Processing building. You might get to be in a 900 division. The 900's are the Color Guard, Flag Corps, Band, and Rifle Corps. They have it EASY in RTC side, so there's a free ride through BMT. 4: Prepare for snow. Snow like you wouldn't believe. And prepare to shovel it. A lot of it. 5: Recruit terminology you will learn: Recruits = "Ricky". "Ricky Crud" = Common cold. You will most likely get one at some point. "Ricky Candy" = When you get a cold, and go to Sick Call, they'll hand out these little cough drops. They're tan, hard discs, that taste suprisingly good after 3 weeks of BMT. Enjoy. "RCPO" (pronounced "arr-poc") = Recruit Chief Petty Officer. Head of your division as far as recruits go. Relatively nice job. Also someone you wanna befriend early on. "ARCPO" (pronounced "a-rock") = Assistant to the RCPO. Can be the best and worst job. They're the ones that sing cadence. They're also the ones the RDC's (think Drill Sergeant) blame if the division is off step, or can't march. Some other terms I'll give you, but no definitions...."Ricky Boxing" and "Ricky Fishing". You'll learn those soon enough. 6: There is 13 "Ships" on RTC (Recruit Training Command). Ship 13 is reserved for P-Day use before you're assigned a real ship, and also holds the "Retards and Rejects". There's 3 "special" divisions there. If you end up in Ship 13 for any reason, something has gone wrong. Ship 1, USS The Sullivans, is right in front of the Naval Exchange. BEST ship to be in. Ship 12, however, is at the END of the base, and sucks. The closer to the NEX you are, the better overall. 7: Your 5th week will be Service Week. It rocks. UNLESS, you're a basic recruit. If you're NOT a Guidon, PFC, ARCPO, RCPO, or any other "Recruit staff", you'll be in the Galley. The Galley blows. I was the Guidon for my divison, and was in the Drill Hall all day. Teaching P-Day n00bs how to march. Very schway. 8: A solid knowledge of the Navy Hymn, Anchor's Aweigh, would be helpful. There's a tunnel underneath a highway that cuts off 1/3rd of RTC from the rest of the base. Everytime you march under that tunnel, you will sing Anchor's Aweigh as loud as possible. Get used to it. :P 9: PT-0 is a joke, don't sweat it. PT-1 is a joke as well, but not as funny. Still, don't sweat it. You MUST MUST MUST pass PT-2. If you don't....you're screwed. No Battle Stations, no graduation on time with your division. And that REALLY sucks. 10: Enjoy the "fun" stuff you get to do. The Marlinspike (line handling class), BFT (Basic Firefighter Training), and the Rifle Range are all hella fun. In fact, you're lucky, as when I was there they had JUST started construction on the live fire range. I still had to do the laser tag-esqe range. Firefighter training will prolly be the most fun, however has it's downside. That's when you get the Gas Chamber. It's better than it sounds/looks/feels. You will survive it, and ultimately enjoy it. Especially if your Bad Ass Master At Arms pukes on himself, or if your RCPO tries to run away...:P I could go on forever and ever about RTC and NTC, but I won't. You've got to experience them for yourself. What I've said is a mere inkling of what you're going to experience in those 8-11 weeks at RTC. If your "A" School is NTC-side, then prepare to see that area for a while. But NTC is FAR more FUN than RTC side. All in all, you should have no problems with BMT, and should be ready to go to the fleet. Just remember us when you do. Have FUN at Basic, and remember, it's all just a game. ITSN Stuart W. Culpepper, USN (Ret.) P.S.: If you happen to stay in Great Lakes for A-School......DO NOT GO TO Babydolls. It's a strip joint north of Gurney. Trust me on this one. :P |

I wish you the best of luck! Don't forget that boot camp is supposed to be a bit difficult, that the service will only be as good as you make it, and that what happens overseas, stays overseas...
