    Need hosting package

One of the sites i run has started to require a sizeable download bandwidth - it's a magazine in pdf format that's about 3-5Mb for every download - and the webspace it's currently on is asking for 60GBP a month to cover the extra bandwidth needed.

What i'm looking for, as i think this is a bit steep to say the least, is somewhere where i can host the pdf's ready for download without having to pay through the nose every month.

To give you an idea of what i'm looking for, here's one i'm considering:
    http://www.hostultra.com/hosting.html
but this has the disadvantage that it's US so the ping wouldn't be too wonderful (Most of the downloads are within the UK)

So if anyone knows of a company, or has had a postive experience with any other company that provides a service that i'm looking for, particularly a UK-based one, please let me know.

    Many Thanks.

What is the current bandwidth utilization on a monthly basis? Don't worry about ping so much as throughput. Ping doesn't matter when it comes to a website, it's available throughput and overall available bandwidth that matter more than anything.

Ah, i see. Ok, i shall look that instead then

The current bandwidth varies, and as the mag is archived is likely to increase as time goes on, but roughly speaking, it's about 1Gb a month.

I use webhost4life. They offer unlimited bandwidth, or so they say. If you do not need to run a server intensive application, they may be your best bet. They have some pretty cheap rates. If you decide to go with them, let me know and I'll give you my referral code. :-)

    40 bucks a months..... 250 gigs bandwidth.
    16 bucks a month...... 150 gigs bandwidth.

I just checked the webhost4life website and for as little as 4.95 / month you can get unlimited bandwidth.

    Re: Need hosting package

the problem is the amount of disk space they give you..... 100 MEGS for the 4.95.... host excellence is in the gigabyte range for the same money...... and the 50 gig transfer a month is nothing to sneeze at.....

    Re: Need hosting package

Thanks for the replies, guys, most useful.

Spoke to my man today, and whereas i thought it was the magazine soaking up most of the bandwidth it turns out it's actually the forums. Surprised to find out that it's using over 2.5Gb a month and only 0.5Gb or so of that is the mag. Also surprised to learn that my site uses more server resources than all the other sites on the server put together! (there's around 150 sites on there..)

Anyway, i told him if he was going to charge that much i'd have to host elsewhere so he's going to contact the main host (i think WebFusion) and see if he can get a better deal on a bandwidth upgrade. Having another host (for the mag) might still help the bandwidth use just sneak under the next bandwidth band so this has still been very helpful.

    Cheers!

In the grand scheme of things, 3GB total/month in bandwidth isn't bad. The TG web site consumes about 70-90GB/month of the 1200GB/month that the server is allowed.

Wow. That's a lotta bandwidth. Is that just the site, or including all the gaming?

Just out of curiosity (and my fascination with stats and graph type things), i'd be interested to see the breakdown of bandwidth use between forums and the specific games; NS, CS, etc..

    That's just the web site..

    Here's some numbers for curiousity...

    So far this month:

The TG web site has used 118 GB.
The BF/JO/GR server has used 7.9 GB.
The NS server has used 103 GB.
The CS server has used 155 GB.
The C&E/NWN/SWAT 4 server has used 9.4 GB.

That would seem to imply that the CS players are the biggest gasbags in the TG community. We approve

Crivens. i am genuinely amazed. And we're only halfway through the month too. That's so much more traffic (for the site, and the game servers) than i'd ever guessed. Excellent.

And nice to see CS beating NS by a good 52Gb too...
