Re: Announcing the Tactical OS Project

They're talking dev work. Remember, one of the goals of the project is to KISS.

Although I'm saddened to see that ATI users need not apply. I fully understand why, though.

Re: Announcing the Tactical OS Project

I would like to see:

IRC/Messenger Programs
Web Browser
Email Client
Text editor
And besides games, that is it. Nice, clean, quick.

Have the GUI less windows looking and more like a command interface from an RTS

Have the ability to sync with RSS feeds automaticaly on the destop background (kind of like an active desktop in windows).

/me dreams

Well you could design (or find) such a scheme. KDE is a pretty popular window manager. If you find / design one in the immediate future, get it to Mateo and we'll probably look at including it in the distro.

Re: Announcing the Tactical OS Project

A nice base distro to use may be Gentoo. You can easily customize it to your specifications, then package it up or make more of a livecd environment, etc... Since you'd probably be x86 only (I would assume?), making a sufficient binary release shouldn't be a problem. In that case, portage would be your package manager. You could have your own rsync server as well, so adding and updating your own packages in addition to Gentoo's would be feasable with your own ebuilds (game binary installers, etc). There are some GUI frontends to portage, but I do not use any.

If you want a Gentoo box to play around with, let me know. While people make it out as a geek distro and we that use it as Gentoo zealots, well...it is easy to install if you can read, and we're zealots for a reason.

That, and I think for a project like this, it'd work great as a starting point.

Well, that's an interesting idea. Never really thought about it....obviously, I think going for something more windows like was a better idea, as we are going for ease of use.

But an RTS like interface is possible with Talisman and Litestep under windows...could be possible with Linux as well. Maybe start with Enlightenment as a code base?

Interesting....why would you want that?

Well, if someone has a spare ATI card they want to lend to the cause, then we will do it. Since I have an NVIDIA card, and their support is pretty good, I can focus on code, not whether drivers work.

Would a 9000 do? Or do you need something more current?

Would it be possible to have two (or three or four) GUIs to choose from? I mean, they're just interfaces, right?

Whatever you do, I request that you include the ability to use expanding toolbars instead of or in addition to clunky ol' icons. I really like a clean desktop that has a toolbar that quickly expands to display the program icons that I often use. Then, of course, the Start menu is available to find programs that I don't often use...

Yeah, that might be possible. The problem becomes size of the OS. They aren't just interfaces, though. Maybe they started out that way, but now, they are more complete desktop environments, with applications, their own theme engines, and backing libraries.

The reason why most distros bleed over to 2 or three disks is because of this. Installed, GNOME + KDE runs ~1.5 gb.

The way around that, and superior to my mind, is release "flavors" based on a specific DE. So you would have one disk for Gnome, another for KDE, etc..., optimized to that set of code.

Like object bar? Something like that? Or more of a wharf, like litestep, Winstep, etc..?

Re: Announcing the Tactical OS Project

Saw this over at the YOPER forums.....
Quote:
The Ten Commandments for Linux Distributions

1) Thou shalt recognize the printer.
2) Thou shalt receive pictures from a digital camera.
3) Thou shalt acknowledge the Video Card & Monitor.
4) Thou shalt identify the Hard Disk.
5) Thou shalt approve the CPU and the Motherboard.
6) Thou shalt connect to the Internet.
7) Thou shalt work with any CD & DVD rom.
8) Thou shalt have all movie codecs to watch all the porn we have.
9) Thou shalt be easy to install.
10) Thou shalt not crash.
Comments? I think this is food for thought.

That would do fine. You want to test the ATI version?

Yeah, there are lots of cool ones out there. ObjectBar is especially cool. I'm not familiar with the others. I just want a tool bar that "auto hides" and has an expanding menu for my favorite apps and an expanding menu for all of my apps, similar to the Windows quick launch menu and Start menu.
