Reconfigurable hardware is one of the cutting edge fields in computer science, and does not require alot of experience in the engineering field. I designed and implemented a processor for my thesis, and I have very little knowledge of the engineering side of how a processor works. I do however know logic gate theory and this allows me to design hardware from a completely logical perspective.
