Pffft.... You're just picking nits...

Here's the kind of differences the film had from the book: http://www.factmonster.com/spot/quiz/harrymovie3/1.html

Silly little stuff.
But this was the first film that really captured the essence of the book. The first one that was even remotely dark like the books are...

But anyway... Does anyone really consider the films to be canonical?

Re: Harry Potter

Yes, I realize that Aunt Petunia wasn't supposed to fly off, although I did find it rather funny that they took some artistic license in having her floating in the sky in the background when Harry took off. On the other hand, look at the way they cast Aunt Petunia. The character was vile in the book, and they really captured that with this woman. "If there's something wrong with the bitch.." I mean, *I* wanted to slap that woman, and cheered at the idea of her floating away, to the ceiling or otherwise.

Yes, some characters are missing, but really now- that doesn't negate the whole movie. I for one would have liked to see Peeves, but all in all, I can't complain. As for Quidditch, those scenes tend to be bland in the books- I don't mind skipping a round or two for the sake of brevity.

The Maurauder's map and its authors were left out, but again, for a 2 hour movie, that wasn't the most important factor to consider. They have the opportunity to bring it up in the future.

As for the set, I was absolutely delighted with the scenery that they used for this movie- I felt like I got to see so much more of the grounds and landscape that the previous two movies didn't even touch. The castle felt so much grander and bigger- I'm glad they had the opportunity to show that. And what about that whomping willow? I thought that was fantastic! Poor bird, though.

There are numerous pieces missing, but the third movie, more than the campy 2 that preceeded it, really captured the feel of the book. The first two were too "and they lived happily ever after," which is NOT how the books were. The third one captured the anger Harry felt, and his growing bitterness that becomes prevalent in future books.

I have to agree, Cing- if you're going for a canonical version of the book on film, good luck- I can't think of a single movie that word for word, scene for scene, takes no artistic license or leaves nothing out at all. This movie, overall, did one hell of a job capturing what the book was all about.

One last thing- I got the impression that the director read the book numerous times, as opposed to the first 2 where it felt like some disney writer didn't like how dark the book was and wanted to lighten the mood.

Re: Harry Potter

Never read a HP book. I always thought they were more children's books, but looking at the august panel here...maybe I should pick up the first one.

Re: Harry Potter

I love Harry Potter, both the books and the movies(maybe the books a little more). I do wish that the movies would stay a little more true to the books.... When you change the director and the set in the middle of a series of movies it makes me unhappy. One is especially unhappy if he is a fan that goes to see the movie at midnight the day it opens... Maybe I should just stick to reading the books...

Re: Harry Potter

The 3rd movie just was short. They neutered it, pasted the MOST important scenes in, and crammed it into... what. 1.5 hours? It was far too short, and they cut out far too much. It was like the actors literally shot the whole thing in a day going "Okay we need y'all running here to say this, then we do the scene where you run away from the werewolf, wait, stop there and talk a bit. We need this scene too."

They could have fit more stuff in with a good hour more.

Re: Harry Potter

I started reading it last night. It is interesting so far. My mom read it in a day and a half. She said that unlike the last book, which we both agreed was anti-climactic, this one throws you right in and keeps you interested. Every time I have picked it up so far I didn't want to sit it down, which is too bad for me seeing as I am at work and have more important things to be tending too...

On the subject of the last movie, I hate that they left out so much of the book. It was very poorly done. The only real redeeming thing about it was that, it did capture the darker parts of the books. It conveyed that Harry was angry, and that things weren't "And they lived happily ever after". The first 2 movies were like that, and it is only too bad that they did such a -good- job of cutting out important parts of the book.

In my opinion, it's great that someone has came along and got people to read more, there are too many ignorant people in our world, (mainly america) who rely on TV for their whole existance.

Oh, and azzman, HP Lovecraft is awesome.

Re: Harry Potter

I really enjoyed the book.I finished it yesterday morning and I can't wait for the next one.

The movies arent very exciting to me for the most part. The third book was my favorite one and the movie kinda bored me.Also I miss the old Dumbledore.Im not really expecting much for the upcoming one as I didn't really like the fourth book but I will go see it anyways.

Re: Harry Potter

Another awesome way to take in the Harry Potter books is listening to them on CD. The books are unabridged and read by the fantastic Jim Dale (he is simply the best narrator I've ever heard). If you spend a lot of time driving to visit family or vacations, this is an excellent way to get the whole family to hear the story. Just be prepared for 21 hours of driving

Re: Harry Potter

Finished reading the book, it was enjoyable. As far as character deaths go..... I really wasn't that broken up over this one, I'm not sure why, but it didn't have quite the feeling of finality to it that I would have liked. Another thing, I'm still not quite sure how she plans on wrapping this up in another 600 pages, because I really don't see that happening, I think she's going to have to carry the series on for at least another 2 books or else she's going to feel as though the end was rushed.

If some of you didn't like the third movie, that's because Chris Columbus (I believe that's his name) didn't direct the third movie, and unfortunately, Richard Harris died. No one can ever say Alan Rickman is bad in any movie he's done lately. And of course many of the points in the books are going to be left out, they get longer and longer as the series goes on. They would have to start making the things 2.5-3 hrs long, and while I would sit through that, I'm sure many would not. The only thing about the movies that bother me is the fact that the principal characters are showing their age so quickly, they look like they're 17 or 18 playing 13 year olds.

Re: Harry Potter

moviefone says it was 2.5 hours, but... well then. Make the damn things 3 hours. Or split them in 2.

Re: Harry Potter

I fully agree on the Dumbledore casting- it's such a shame the first actor died. He really gave me that warm and fuzzy feeling that I expect from Dumbledore. This new guy gave me the impression that Dumbledore was a hippie lunatic.

I'd say he looks the part.
