It's a dried up lakebed. Notice the millitary installation on the southern shore of the lakebed, and all the runways. There's also a ordinance testing site Southwest of the base, full of craters.

This is definately the best thing since sliced bread. Certainly the most exciting thing I found on the internet for many years.
