Re: Update on Tactical OS

For most users, installing a second OS is a task they'd much rather not undertake. Truly, as much as I love and trust Mateo, if this weren't a LiveCD distro I wouldn't even think of touching it, at least not for my gaming machine.

Yeah, that's mostly correct. Live CDs work by dumping the entire OS into RAM, with the ability to save to a USB drive/second CD drive.

Some Live CDs, however, have an installer, which transfers the CD onto a harddisk. The better versions of this process handle the formatting, user creation, passwords, etc. (Knoppix, Mepis, Kanotix...actually, mostly the Debian based Live Cds.). Slax's version requires a formatted disk, but the tools are there to format it.

What I was shooting for was something fast, based on source code, that did something similar.

What's the difference between using a LiveCD and an installed OS, then? Just that you'd have to uninstall some stuff if it doesn't work? Big deal...
Let's assume you want to dual boot, but aren't sure if your hardware will run it. On mid-range systems, Slax runs great.

If you have a Raid or SCSI system, it probably won't run that well. I don't have the equipment to test it, but reports are that systems with those specs aren't having luck installing.

So if you can't find that out prior to installing, the user experience is similar to that of linux adoptees 4 years ago: "My system is broken, Linux sucks!" I want to avoid that no matter what.

If you have to decide between a LiveCD that works for most people with most of the games that TG hosts and an installed OS that works for ALL of the people and ALL of the games that TG hosts, then I'd certainly opt for the installed OS.
I don't think it's actually either/or, but I agree.

Re: Update on Tactical OS

Excellent to hear some solid progress going on!

Personally, I prefer gnumeric + abiword. I will look for a small, easy to use presentation program that has little dependencies (Siag Envo looks promising but I need to check it out in further detail).

I could live without presentation software, but that's just me.

Re: Update on Tactical OS

Also, is the LiveCD going to be using that sweet new filesystem that let's you write changes right on the cd?

UnionFS? I'll try. The ability to make changes on the CD is pretty sweet, I just don't know if I have the technical abilities to do it. I tend to run in the other direction when someone mentions the file system.

UnionFS ftw!

The implementations are amazing, not only is your OS portable now, but all your settings, and even files / installs are ready to be loaded *anywhere*.
You can even use it on a dvd+-r.
*sparkles in me geeky eyes*
