I had a bad experience there, I wouldnt move to Chicago either, I had a bad experience there too.

And I know the French arent all arrogant, just 99% of the ones I met while visiting France were, with absolutely no provocation at all.

Yeah the humidity makes ya sweat a lot in texas, but i just hate the 115 degree heat here cuz its just too much. It actually hurts to go outside in july. The scenery is also kinda depressing and vacant here, i mean my highschools front "lawn" is made up of boulders and stones.

You know, that is a common misconception about all 3rd world countries. I was in Brazil for 10 days and not one time did I feel unsafe. I walked the streets, by myself, and at night, and had no problems at all. Of course, I did not go to the favelas or any of the slum areas, but I would not do that here either.

In Brazil, with $2k/month, you could live VERY well.

Exactly. I've been to El Salvador and Guatemala, both poster children for 3rd world poverty, and I've felt about as safe as I am in Boston.

Only time I felt a little like 'I should not be here" is late at night in Antigua. No lights, pitch black, dust coming up from the cars riding the cobblestone streets, it was disorienting to say the least. Even then, the only danger I was in was getting run over, or lost.

Next year, we will go to El Salvador again, to visit the family, and to...Roatan (Honduras), Costa Rica, or maybe Las Perlas in Panama as our side trip.

I'll tell you, though, wandering around the 3rd world sure changes your prespective. We don't have poverty in the US. We just don't. Not like that.

Doesn't take going there to see that, to know that. It's so true though, and it's sad.

It's no misconception. Look at the crime rates in countries that track it... Larger cities have higher crime rates than rural areas, regardless of country. Compare the crime rate in Rio de Janeiro, San Salvador, Tegucigalpa or the city of Guatemala to the crime in San Diego, Atlanta, Boston or Houston and you'll see that they ARE dangerous. I won't mention Aruba...
