Yeah, and I find that sad and disturbing.

Re: Thoughts and Prayers for those targeted by Hurricane Katrina
I just saw that the storm has n lowered to a strong cat4, but barely. On the weather channel they said that if it does not dissipate, it could go clear up into the great lakes by wednesday, so this could concern a lot more than just New Orleans. check the weather channel online to see a broadcast that they did on its possible path if youre concerned about your own personal safety. Best wishes and good luck to everyone.
I actually did the legwork and found a link for you to see the projected path.

Re: Thoughts and Prayers for those targeted by Hurricane Katrina
That is actually scary. The mindset of some people is disturbing, but that surpasses that in every way.

Re: Thoughts and Prayers for those targeted by Hurricane Katrina
I'm just on the eastern edge of the projected path in central Alabama. If it stays on the expected trail, hopefully all I'll get is a lot of rain and some dicey wind.
Hurricanes and tropical storms give me the heebie-jeebies. Ivan broke my spirit last year, so every potential power outage causes me a lot of anxiety.

I got hit in homestead Florida when it was a cat 1 and my power is still out. Most of the city of homestead was covered in water but luckily a few sunny days have taken care of most of the water. Hopefully i'll get electricity later today or tommorow morning. I feel very sorry for any in the path of this storm now and i hope everyone makes it through safely.

Crap, I didn't know anywhere in Florida got taken down at all... I don't have cable though, so I have no way of really following this, nor do I want to.

Re: Thoughts and Prayers for those targeted by Hurricane Katrina
Turned on the news a few minutes ago and saw some video of 'Nawlins. It looks bad, but not as bad as I had expected it to look. Lots of structural damage to the pretty, old buildings it looked like. Saw one building with the 2nd floor wall ripped off. FoxNews was live in the French Quarter and the streets just looked wet, not flooded. Bourbon Street looks messier in some of the Mardis Gras videos I've seen than it does right now. That was the scariest proposition to me.. having half the city under 20 feet of water.
They say gas prices are about to rise with the shutdown of the oil production platforms. CNN has brought up the idea of opening the strategic oil reserves to help out. I think I'll go fill up my car before the gas prices really go through the roof.

Re: Thoughts and Prayers for those targeted by Hurricane Katrina
Gulfport, Mississippi got hit pretty hard. The main office of Mississippi Power is located there and they are completly without power, as is most of the area. 190,000 or so in South Alabama currently without power as well.
The good news: Katrina is barely a category 1 hurricane right now, and is expected to be a tropical storm by the next National Weather Service update. Mississippi and west Alabama are in for a windy and rainy night, though.

Re: Thoughts and Prayers for those targeted by Hurricane Katrina
I live in Mobile, AL, and most of the downtown area is flooded. I heard earlier on the radio that the water down there was between 1-2 feet below the lights on the streetlights, which is absolutely amazing. Thankfully I live over in West Mobile, which is alot higher, and my neighborhood is on top of a hill that crests another, larger hill. So far the only damage we heard of too our house was a large tree half uprooted in our front yard, which broke some water lines to our house that had too be shut off, and a small tree in our back yard that fell onto our house, nothing catastrophic though. I don't know how long our house will be without power/water, but I think we have come through well compared to thousands of others. We are in Destin, FL right now and even here we lost power for almost 18 hours. It was kind of fun over here though, we brought the video camera and took some awesome footage of things like the huge waves and some of the high water levels.
As for NO, they're saying that it isn't as bad as they had thought it would be, which is always good. I have family who live their, they evacuated but no idea on the condition of their house, so I'm praying for them. I was surprised that the SuperDome's roof ripped, even if it wasn't that bad. Hopefully the emergency services reactions will be fast, and we'll get utilities back soon. I had heard on the news somewhere that around 317,000 people were without power.
