Re: Thoughts and Prayers for those targeted by Hurricane Katrina
I completely agree broken. Although it may seem a bit extreme, my mom said, "We ought' to be shooting their asses". Now, my Mom is *not* one to be violent in any way, and it made her that mad. I haven't read about the gunmen with AK's, but I'm going to check it out now before I go to sleep.

Jesus Christ almighty, some people are just retarded, as are some situations. Especially people like that, what are they thinking? What do they want to try and do and how the hell can it make sense to them?

Re: Thoughts and Prayers for those targeted by Hurricane Katrina
Has anyone ever read "The Stand" by Stephen King? Basically 98% of the American population gets wiped out by a super-virus. The behavior of the survivors in that piece of fiction is remarkably similar to the stories we're seeing coming out of New Orleans.
Wyz (and anyone else personally affected by this mess), my heart goes out to you.

Re: Thoughts and Prayers for those targeted by Hurricane Katrina
New Orleans is gone. Period. If what happened to Homestead after hurricane Andrew is any indication, most people will not come back for a long time. The city is destroyed, 80% under water, near total loss... Who would come back? Why? To wait for another hurricane? Even if there were those who would come back, what will they do in the months/years it takes for the city to just become reasonably habitable again? Ironically, the city survived the hurricane at first, only to have the levee's break a day or two later and flood the city.
I am saddened and horrified by what I see on TV. It is a total disaster, not just to NO, but the whole area. Bridges destroyed, houses wiped off the face of the earth, businesses that will never reopen. The entire area will feel this effect for over a decade. 9/11 was nothing compared to this in terms of devastation.
My heart goes out to everyone in the area.

Re: Thoughts and Prayers for those targeted by Hurricane Katrina
I made the 9/11 comparison in my mind. It was (at least by recent counts) far worse in terms of human lives lost, but the complete devestation of the economy from 'Nawlins to Mobile is going to make the impact of Katrina far worse. Mother Nature can sure teach us some hard lessons.

Louisiana emergency management folks say the water is going down and they're having some amount of success with the giant sandbags. Their efforts were slowed by the lack of slings to carry the sandbags under the helicopters but they have more on the way. 3000 and 20000 pound sandbags -- that's alot of sand!
CNN is at the airport and is reporting on a field hospital being setup there by FEMA. It's just taking time to get all the emergency assets mobilized but I think the powers-that-be are doing an amazing job.

This will influence the national economy, not just the regional.

According to the NO officials, there could be thousands dead in the city.. This only keeps getting worse.

Re: Thoughts and Prayers for those targeted by Hurricane Katrina
It will effectively raise the price of nearly everything. If gas goes up, it will cost more to ship things places, it will cost more to fuel cars (obviously), it will make food cost more. The average American cannot afford the 3.09$ that gas has been (at least here) for very long. For the sake of everything in America, we need alternate sources of enrgy at this time more than ever. Unfortunately, everyone in America is going to be hit by this tragedy in more than one way.
One other thing I would like to adress is this; when the tsunami hit Asia we sent aide. We sent our money, we sent our people to help them. We have no one, the president of Venezuela is offering us cheap Gasoline only so that he looks better. The fact of the matter is, the UK is probably our closest friend. But that is the extent of things.
Don't anyone take that the wrong way please. Just my opinion, and it won't change, if you feel differently, then it's fine, I have no problem with that.

Re: Thoughts and Prayers for those targeted by Hurricane Katrina
GOOD JOB, TEXAS!
It'll seem less noteworthy as the rest of the nation steps up to help in time, and it only makes sense that LA's neighbor is the first to lend a hand, but...
...TX is really going to bat for LA today. The Astrodome is housing refugees, and school system(s) are offering to host children displaced from their academic agendas by the storm... nevermind the many individual things many Texans are doing to help out... plumbers... electricians... boat owners... all traveling to LA, doing what it takes to help other good people.
Yes, the nation will coordinate EXTRAordinary assistance to counter this EXTRAordinary tragedy, but, for what it's worth, I heard about Texas doing first... and in fine form.
( this concludes my complimentary talk of Texas, deserved by genuine act and necessitated by my taking regular jabs at Texas any chance I get
)

Re: Thoughts and Prayers for those targeted by Hurricane Katrina
That is awesome, I hadn't heard anything about that as of yet. It's wonderful to see Americans coming together even more to combat this catastrophe. All those people out there in boats looking for survivors who are risking themselves to save others are true heroes. Along with every single Coast Guard down there.

Re: Thoughts and Prayers for those targeted by Hurricane Katrina
I noticed that authorities have asked citizens not to independently pilot boats during rescue efforts. Instead (and this makes sense), they want people to bring the boats directly to the authorities, who will then decide who pilots them where, when, how, and why.
I'm sure some owners are piloting their own boats, but it's, ideally, coordinated.
I can only imagine how frustrating it would be for trained rescuers slowed by well-intentioned amateurs who elsewhere could be applying themselves where there is ample need and a better match for their own skillsets.Steam Community? Re: Thoughts and Prayers for those targeted by Hurricane Katrina
Our family's thoughts and prayers are also for the TG members and other victims of Katrina. As I posted earlier in the BF2 forum (probably should have posted it here), I hope |TG|Ragnar is doing okay. I believe he lives in Mobile, Alabama, and I haven't seen him online for a couple days now.
I myself can still remember being in the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake here in the SF Bay Area when it hit. I was in my gf's 2nd floor apartment when it hit, and the walls started swaying to an almost 45 degree angle. I remember rushing to the doorway like they taught us in school, but immediately realizing that being on the 2nd floor, what would it matter if I was in the doorway if the whole building collapsed. Fortunately, it didn't.
Anyway, that earthquake was pretty bad, being the largest earthquake to hit along the San Andreas fault in the bay area since 1906, but it was nothing like what I've seen of Katrina. Like I said, I hope everything turns out okay for the TG members living in that region, and anyone else involved with this disaster.

Re: Thoughts and Prayers for those targeted by Hurricane Katrina
Thoughts and prayer go out to those of you that are in that zone, or have family or friends there. Having no tele, I'm only getting images and clips from the 'net, and it brings tears to my eyes imagining the destruction, it's just hard to comprehend

Wrath and beating to the morons that are looting for the sake of gain. If they can scavenge food, and drink, that's one thing, but to be stealing, just to gain material items....I shouldn't even say it, but a bullet, and let them float. I've seen folks gathering tv's, jeans, stereo's etc....that just makes me crazy!
rant/ off topic, but has anyone seen where any other country in the world has offered any assistance ? /rant
