Re: Thoughts and Prayers for those targeted by Hurricane Katrina
All the stuff they are looting should just keep the bodies at the bottom after being shot. It's one thing to steal to survive. It's another to steal to increase one's possessions.
My family and I will be praying for those affected.

Re: Thoughts and Prayers for those targeted by Hurricane Katrina
I live in Louisiana, near the border to Texas, but apparently it's so bad that they're sending refugees all the way out to my little hole-in-the-wall town... we're getting 7 new students I hear. Pretty sure they're going into the lower grades, sad stuff.

Re: Thoughts and Prayers for those targeted by Hurricane Katrina
Well, today we drove back to my house from Destin (around 120 miles, but even taking off routes away from traffic it took us an extra hour to get here) and we were going to clean our fridge out before it all goes bad. So my mom and sister spend 20 minutes getting every single piece of food out of the fridge and freezer while I go unboard a few select windows/doors to open and get some air flowing. Whaddya know, 15 minutes after we leave for the trash dropoff area, the power comes back on... Then, when we get there, even though it is 4:55 on everybody's clocks, the cop tells us that it's 5 after, and since the dropoff stopped at 5 we had to unload anything we had just put on and go back. Then again, atleast my house is still a house, and thank God I have power. Whenever I go home again I'll upload some pictures of my house. Not much damaged, about 1/2 of our privacy fence, and 2 trees. One actually moved our steps about 3 inches away from our house when it fell, and broke our water line.
Did anyone else see that the SE 1/3 of the nation is going to be low on gas? As for gas for us, my grandparents had about 25 gallons, plus another 5 gas cans we picked up at a Walmart and filled up and took to Mobile to give to my aunt and uncle who don't have power and are running out of gas for their generator. On the way back we filled up the car again, the generator we took with us, and refilled the 5 gas cans we kept in the car, plus an additional 8 cans that we had a friend buy for us. Hopefully this can hold us over for a little a while. A politician from AL (might've been the Attorney General) was on the news asking for AL not to drive if they could, and try to conserve gas for emergency vehicles to use to help other people. out of the 20 or so gas stations we passed, only 2 had gas there. I was just watching the news, and it was a live helo feed of what looked like a National Guard assualt team. 4 men, 1 with a large riot shield, 2 with SMGs, and 1 with an M16 or M4, couldn't see. They were hopping over a fence and looking around, but it never said where they were or what they were doing. Wow, that's really disjointed and I'll try and edit some stuff in, but I'm tired and trying to finish this fast before I have to turn off the computer. And Wyz, the reason Texas is helping so much is because that Mississippi is in absolutely no shape to help either, and Alabama is aiding MS. It was great to see when we were headed back that there was an almost mile long line of emergency vehicles/power trucks and cherry pickers all headed into Mobile.

Re: Thoughts and Prayers for those targeted by Hurricane Katrina
Latest word from Southern Company power companies impacted by Katrina (as of last night):
Mississippi Power will have to rebuild about 70% of its system infrastructure, and this is expected to take at least 4 weeks in the hardest-hit areas. 99% of Alabama Power customers in Mobile *who are able to receive power* (important detail) are expected to have power restored by Wednesday (9/7/05). 99% of APC customers in Birmingham will have power restored by Friday night, 9/2/05 and Tuscaloosa/Western Division by Sunday night, 9/4/05 (again, those able to receive power). The only part of Alabama really affected by this is the southwest region, but hopefully someone will find this information useful. |

It's really a tragedy watching the people trying to get out from the Superdome area right now. A few trouble makers are making it tough for the organizers apparently.

Re: Thoughts and Prayers for those targeted by Hurricane Katrina
The focus for people "on the ground" in New Orleans is exclusively on rescuing survivors (when looting doesn't detract from it).
Dead bodies are being tied to STOP signs, left to float, and eventually hang when the water (which has finally crested) drains, until the cleanup effort begins. Can you imagine that? Bodies tied to STOP signs? It seems like fiction. I wish it were.

This is utterly sickening.
http://www.cnn.com/2005/WEATHER/09/0...per/index.html "Sniper fire halts hospital evacuation Gunmen fire at medical workers and patients at Charity Hospital" "Evacuations by boat were halted after armed looters threatened medics and overturned one of their boats." |

The pattern there.. attacking hospitals and medics...
... is this drug addicts fighting to get drugs? At least I can wrap my head around that explanation. Is it that simple?

Re: Thoughts and Prayers for those targeted by Hurricane Katrina
"FEMA head: Working in "conditions of urban warfare"
"Armed gangs attempting rapes, police warn" I just don't get it. What is the point in all of this? What drives these animals (and I use that term rather loosely) to enage in such activities? I mean, again, this is perhaps the biggest natural disaster to ever hit the US - and in the wake of it all, we have looting, raping and other assorted violence. You know, I don't mean to sound racist, but lets not kid ourselves...Is it some sort of coincidence that atleast 99% (actually all that I've seen, really) of these animals are blacks? What does that tell you? What message does this send to the rest of the country? This is going to really open a lot of peoples eyes and I bet it's going to have a major backlash after it's all said and done. All armed servicemen and policemen shouldn't even hesitate in putting a bullet in the head of those causing harm to other victims in this tragedy. That's my take for whatever it's worth. Just rediculous and disheartening to say the very least.

Re: Thoughts and Prayers for those targeted by Hurricane Katrina
i was hoping that the majority of people would pull together and help eachother out, rather then murder, loot, and rape. The people doing that are simply pathetic. I havent read the whole thread so i dunno if this has been mentioned, but why hasnt martial law been declared? the governor should have done this at the first sign of looting/violence. I mean after 4 days how many military people do we have there helping out with the violence? 2000 or so? that doesnt cut it. Before the storm the national gaurd and other military agencies should have been 400 or so miles away from new orleans, ready to go in as soon as the storm passed.

Re: Thoughts and Prayers for those targeted by Hurricane Katrina
It just shows me just how close the looters and such were close to being lawbreakers during normal times. The only thing that kept them out of jail was the police threat. When the police aren't around, their real personality shows. Rape, rob, and steal.. do whatever they feel like. They aren't normally good people, it was just the police threat that kept them good. Most of us have morals that keep us doing the right thing, the people out there raping and beating people do not have such morals.
.brok3n., the folks in such dire need are the ones that had no place to go before the storm. They lived check to check, had no car, and their entire circle of family and friends was in 'Nawlins. There was no way for them to run before the storm. They have no way of leaving now. I think it just shows who the poor people were before the storm. Unfortunately, as bad off as they may have been 2 weeks ago, they are even worse off now. Race has something to do with it, but it really just shows who the poor people were to begin with. Joe Scarborough was talking about the looting.. He asked what would you do if your family and children were starving and on the verge of death... He said he'd do just about anything he could. Really, I think many of us would go to great lengths.. Not murder or rape, but we'd probably loot the local Wal-Mart for food & water. I don't know what the government needs to do, but I know they need to make drastic changes in the way they're doing what they're doing on Friday. People are going to start dieing in large numbers from starvation, lack of water, and disease. I'm watching some helicopters unload stuff to the victims and it reminds me of scenese from third world countries. It's just rediculous. I know the people on the ground are doing their best with their resources, but the higher ups need to get more people, food, water, and other supplies on the ground. Sorry, just venting.. been watching too much CNN & MSNBC and the stories of some of this crap just anger me. |

I saw an interview with a guy that was walking out of waist deep water with someone.. he said he'd been "out there" multiple times to help other people out. He was risking his own life to save others.. Just an ordinary guy himself. I'm sure there are probably thousands of stories like his and people like him. Those folks are great. It's just a shame that the bad people are taking attention away from the good. It makes me sad. |
