Re: Tactical OS Basic Training

My choices would be KDE then XFCE then E17. So I voted for KDE and Enlightenment.

Inverting the colors on that glock wallpaper makes it much easier on the eyes, and it looks pretty cool to boot. It's my wallpaper for now

I upped the resolution to 1600x1200, but it doesn't look too bad. Here it is. Makes for a neat looking image

I like XFCE, but I think it's a little too inflexible theming wise. I guess you can hide everything.....Maybe I need to rethink that.

Re: Tactical OS Basic Training

Interesting to see all the Gnome/KDE votes.

Are you guys really all that interested in the "start button", or are you voting the apps, which can be included without booting the desktop?

Re: Tactical OS Basic Training

i would like anything that dosent have to load the desktop or any unnessicary programs. anything that would focus more power tward the games. the windows Vista was supposed to include something that would turn off the desktop and such when you were playing games.

That's precisely why I voted fluxbox, fvwm2, and mezzo.

KDE and Gnome don't just handle the interface, they are complete application environments, with cross dependencies. It's sort of pre-Vistaing Vista. An app for everything.

So, you load GNOME, you get a whole raft of stuff you may or may not want running, and apps that may not be the best of breed.

For example, you can burn a CD or DVD via the file manager, but that's not the best solution: KB3, which is for KDE, is better. It's EXACTLY like Nero, only more flexible. So to install that on GNOME, now I have to start grabbing major chunks of KDE as well.

Instead, a better way, if noone cares about a "start" button, is to get something lite, and strip away everything that isn't absolutely necessary for the installed applications.
For KB3, you need: KDE base, and a few of the libraries. That's about 15 mb, and it would only run when you wanted to burn something.

You know....fluxbox, fvwm2, and Mezzo can be included on a single CD in the less space than it takes to install KDE or Gnome.

The flipside of this, is that putting aside my bias, the end users have to want to use it. So that's why I put the poll up.

I like my start button! Heh. I use KDE all the time.. KMail for email, Konsole, K3b, Krusader file manager (when I use a gui filemanager that is). I like having icons on my desktop for some reason. I've tried flux and all the rest and just can't get used to not having them.

I think having all the nifty features of a DE will help folks new to Linux switch over.

But, I'm quite happy with Gentoo, so my opinion may not much matter
