If it is dead sexy, light, and fast, people might make the effort. Then again, they might not. The key issue with KDE especially is 100 programs for everything (3 text editors, 4 different media players, 2 different file managers....). The menu is going to require some serious hacking, Linspire/Xandros style. Quote:

I like gentoo (well vidalinux anyway), but we are going debian for TacticalOS. I want people to be able to do a quick apt-get dist-upgrade in console and have a completely patched and up to date OS without the long emerge time. That said, I'm stealing ideas from Gentoo (-march O3, CFlags) and Yoper (prelinking) to get the whole thing optimized. I can optimize for general 686 and not a specific CPU and still get a big performance boost. I'm just getting the basic package set up, then will start the optimization. |

Re: Tactical OS Basic Training
That is true, however for myself, I'm going to say go for KDE. It's one of the most widely used, and I'd prefer to use something this awesome in accordance with what I already utilize in Linux.
I've got myself a brand new AMD-64 box which I'm just itching to install this on when it comes out. 300 gigs of nothing. And it's gonna stay that way until the first release of this :P

Re: Tactical OS Basic Training
OK, here is an screenshot of TacticalOS using KDE:
![]() And here is STEAM running, and updating under Cedega. ![]() Notice that this is pretty much a stock theme. I'm adding and removing applications, working up some themes, and generally working on the overall configuration. |

Re: Tactical OS Basic Training
I should have this ready in a week, maybe 2 weeks.
I'm going to do an article about Cedega over the next week, and then I need to strip it all out (Steam, Cedega, the games) in order to roll up the ISO. Right now, with all that, it's over 8gb. About 4gb of that is CounterStrike Source, and the rest are files that I need to comb through, install, and delete. Mostly icons and stuff, but some really cool applications as well. The core install is less than 2gb. Including Open Office, Java, KDE, etc.. |

Re: Tactical OS Basic Training
Have you gotten BF2 to run on it?

The next iteration of Cedega is in two weeks, and the Transgaming team has been hinting that they might have it ready for that. Officially, they are still looking at it, but they have a big game or two ready for each major release: for 4.0 they had World of Warcraft and Counterstrike Source running. I was going to wait for them to release, then see if it runs. If it does not, I was going to look at the dx9 patch for WINE, which gets alot of games that Cedega can't run to run.
