Re: Star Wars Empire at War demo
Yeah, well, it is a demo, so it's hard to say how the final balance will turn out. But yeah, I played it for about an hour, and my thoughts:
Review Bias: + Pro-RTS, Pro-Star Wars. The Good: + We don't need no stinking gold mines. Planetary control grants you credits over time. + Hooray for being forced to use tactics in ground battles. Defenders get massive bonus, namely, they have a base, and you don't. They can build on the fly (assuming they have the creds) You have to fly in reinforcements from your own planets, so you better bring enough. Also a plus related to this, You have the option to run the hell away if you're getting pounded, to save what remains of your forces for another day. + Space and ground battles. Bonus points just for having both, and for both being atleast playable (so far) + Voice Acting Hooray for SW characters sounding like the SW characters, and the generic voices are done by professional VA's (a couple of whom I recognized off-hand) +/- Cinematic camera if you want it. Nice little cheese factor, but by no means necissary. The Bad: - Limited unit selection. Even counting the units on the bar that aren't in the demo, doesn't appear to exactly be a massive selection. - Units all look the same. The only differences on most of them is their weapon model, Same goes for the bigger ships in the Empire fleet. - Graphics closer to C&C Generals than Warcraft III, which is to say they aren't really that impressive. - Holy Overpowerd Hero's Batman! I don't know about others that played the demo, but Bobba Fett flew into the middle of my invasion army and just wrecked havoc. I had to retreat and rebuild and give it a second go, just because of him. Overall: Give the demo a check if you're a fan of RTS, Star Wars, or are bored. Be warned, it's a massive file. The final product will atleast be interesting if nothing else, and it appears to put more emphasis on macro-tactics rather than micromanagement.

Re: Star Wars Empire at War demo
Just played it through. It feels closer to Act of War than C&C Generals/ZH. Doesn't have that great rock-paper-scissors formula down that you can feel in AOE and most other RTS. I found myself having to just lump together huge groups of troops towards targets to be successful. I truly enjoyed the space battles, and can see a lot of potential for the land battles.

Re: Star Wars Empire at War demo
Axis and Allies seems to be the closest representation for the galaxy battles. Honestly they still need to keep working on balance because 16 divisions of xwings just bloody own
