Re: What's your favorite film that isn't too popular?

Mantis thank you for that list! I have seen many of those movies but you have listed loads by directors that I like which I haven't seen. I am definately gonna work my way through those.

Some from me:
Starring Paul Newman (who also makes tasty salad dressing):
The Hustler
The Colour of Money
The Sting
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid

Childhood classics:
Flight of Dragons
Krull
Return to Oz (everyone is turned to stone!)

So good they are bad, but often with good stunts kung fu films e.g.:
Prodigal Son
Drunken Master
Shaolin Vs Lama
Scorpian King
Anything with Jackie Chan

Others:
Dr Strangelove: or how I learned to stop worrying and love the bomb
The Animatrix
Spun
The Big Labowski
O Brother Where Art Thou

Re: What's your favorite film that isn't too popular?

A few very good suggestions here; I'll always recommend "Donnie Darko" very highly.

"Blade Runner" remains one of my all-time favourites.

Some anime: "Ghost in the Shell" and "Akira" are essential; so is the Miyazaki stuff that's already been listed.

Fans of "Memento" will probably enjoy "Run Lola Run".

Re: What's your favorite film that isn't too popular?

Run Lola Run, Memento, Red Dawn, Donnie Darko; definitely all good.

Equilibrium had a great premise, but was poorly executed. I liked it, but could have been so much better.

Final Fantasy: Spirits Within is good simply for the fact that it portrays what FF ultimately amounts to.

Living in Oblivion
The Day After (a film I believe everyone should watch at least once in their lifetime)
Tora Tora Tora!
Neverending Story

The Postman (post apoc movie)
Hackers
Army of Darkness (cult classic)
Never Ending story
Naussica of the Valley of the Wind (old school anime at its best)

Re: What's your favorite film that isn't too popular?

Since I don't have any original thoughts, I will just support some posts made by others. Good thread.

Office Space - if you have ever worked in a cube farm it gets 2 bonus stars
Arlington Road - good, though I can barely remember it
Hudsucker Proxy - great story, cool style
The Sting - great - it WAS extremely popular in the 70's
Fight Club - a gem which got overlooked by many due to it's surface appearance - very funny, and deeper than you think

and one original thought...
Quadrophenia - 1979 - Fantastic movie based on the story of The Who's album of the same name.

The Butcher Boy, eh? I couldn't get my wife to watch the movie after I made her read the novel. Read the book, it is exceptional. Also, much more disturbing is McCabes The Dead Scool.

And I cant believe I forgot to add Army of Darkness. One of the best.

Re: What's your favorite film that isn't too popular?

The Butcher Boy was incredible. I got to see that while on a ferry going from Ireland to France back in '98, with a theater full o' Irish people. Needless to say it was a raucous event, drinking pints of the black nectar and watching that movie.

The Big Lebowski

Ok, it's a bit out of range within the topic of the thread but only due to the large cult following it has achieved years after it's release!
