Re: What's your favorite film that isn't too popular?

Agreed, anything by Kevin Smith (Clerks, Dogma, Chasing Amy) is good.

A movie I've only seen on late night TV decades ago that I'd love to see again is What's So Bad About Feeling Good?. Stars George Peppard and Mary Tyler Moore as beatniks who get infected with a disease that causes happiness.

The Last Starfighter (1984)
Old school SF but that is one movie that I cannot pass up when it comes on TV. I've lost count of the number of times I have seen it. I dont know what it is about that movie but it is my weakness because I will stop everything to watch it.

Another one that would be worth it to see would be Liquid Sky. Quite bizarre.

Hmm I have seen the stage version of this, didn't know it was a film. Might have to check it out. If you get a chance to see this on stage you should jump on it! Anyone who likes the films listed here would probably also like plays by Stoppard, Pinter, Miller etc.

That man is right, completely and entirely. Oldboy and Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance are absolutely amazing, I was going to mention them and it looks like only one other person did.

Aside from that, 99% of all the movies I've read so far I've heard of, what the hell guys! Get more undeground!

I rented Amen last night
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0280653/
Sounds and looks amazing, cant wait to actually watch it.

And if we're adding anime, which seems to be underground enough with anyone who's not 14-18, Ghost in the Shell and PERFECT BLUE

I think anyone any age could see how good of a film Perfect Blue was.

Re: What's your favorite film that isn't too popular?

Down By Law isn't exactly mainstream, and happens to be in my top 3 fav films. The holy trinity of Jarmusch, Laurie and Waits does it for me, and is one of the few films i can watch again and again at any time.

Another great film from Jarmusch is Stranger Than Paradise.

And almost everything by the Coen Brothers.

Re: What's your favorite film that isn't too popular?

Ok... an incredible movie you've never heard of...

Leolo

I don't believe there are any DVD copies of this anywhere (I've looked), but IFC occasionally runs it, and I actually just saw it again there a couple weeks ago. If you enjoy 'art house' movies, this is definitely not to be missed.

Also for the not-so-squeamish, anything by Neil Labute is usually hilarious and disturbing, often at the same time. In the Company of Men and Your Friends and Neighbors are two incredibly funny and disconcerting movies. Neither of those movies is a date movie, unless your girlfriend is not easily offended...

Re: What's your favorite film that isn't too popular?

Action - Hard Boiled
Comedy - Strange Brew
Childhood - Flight of the Navigator - I think we rented it almost every other week
Drama - Last of the Mohicans (Daniel Day Lewis)/Rob Roy (Liam Neilson)
Western - The Wild Bunch
War - Waterloo (1970 dir. Sergei Bondarchuk)
TV Movie - TNT's Treasure Island (Charlton Heston)
Samurai - Ran - King Lear in Feudal Japan
Chick Flick - Sliding Doors - Actually enjoyed it a bit. Anything with John Cusack works as well.

Honorable Mention
Black Hawk Down - Popular but I had to put it down
Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels - Better than Snatch
this is SPINAL TAP - It goes to eleven
Disney's the Three Musketeers

woah... for some reason this reminded me of another movie from long ago.. anyone else remember the movie "Swiss Family Robinson"? it was about a proper british family that's shipwrecked on an island - they build this enormous tree house, then make all these crazy traps and coconut bombs and whatnot to fend-off the evil scimitar-wielding pirates!

oh yeah, Lock Stock is good too - not sure if it's better than snatch, but...

Re: What's your favorite film that isn't too popular?

There are films that you KNOW others will like, and then there are films which you know only certain people will like.

I absolutely love these two from the second category:
Slapshot - small town hockey, only truly enjoyable for hockey fans
This is Spinal Tap - the best band ever

'What day did the Lord create Spinal Tap, and couldn't he have rested on that day too?'

"You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to FBmantis again."

Dang it. GREAT find there. This movie is so good, I thought it was lost to the ages because it came out in 1992 and the filmmaker died in a plane crash a couple years later. Nice find man!
