Re: Book Recommendations?

I finally remembered one more author after racking my brain today.

The Darkness series (fantasy)
Harry Turtledove
This author specializes in alternate Earth stories such as what if the South won the Civil War or what if Hitler won WWII. The Darkness series is World War II set in a fantasy realm. A great read with lots of characters.

Also:

The Steerswoman series (sf)
Rosemary Kristein
A good story that is an easy read. Interesting setting that is after the fall of civilization but the with survivors trying to reclaim the past. The people that are called mages are actually what we would call physicts, chemists, botanists, and engineers. The "spells" that they use are actually sciences and leftover technology.

Re: Book Recommendations?

As mentioned before, Philip K. Dick. Anything and everything of his.

Another one nobody has mentioned yet that i'd recommend is Spares by Michael Marshall Smith. A great read.

Re: Book Recommendations?

Crap, I wish I was in my room at home now. I have over 4K of books from pretty much all genres (mostly fantasy, thriller, techno and goth though) and I could recommend a couple dozen writers and/or books easily.

Laurell Hamilton
Ann Rice (Vampire Trilogy is a must)
Jim Butcher <== Very good read with the Dresden Files and his new fantasy series.
Terry Goodkind
RA Salvatore
Melanie Rawn - Dragon Star and Dragon Prince <== Spectacular writer
Footfall
Alas Babylon
Mercedes Lackey - Valdemar

Damn, I just suck at remembering authors and book titles.

Re: Book Recommendations?

How about Michael Crichton? I haven't not enjoyed any of his books.

And Anne McCaffrey? The Pern books are a series, but any single one of them is quite enjoyable.

(Double negatives are cool...)

At the end of the con, after everything was cleaned up, everyone gathered in an empty ballroom, sitting around the walls on the floor, and held a round-robin pun contest, named Callahan's Bar in Spider's honor.

Agreed, they're both good. I also like Robin Cook's medical thrillers, although I haven't kept up with the latest. I tend to prefer F. Paul Wilson's. (He's another doctor and his books often reflect it.)

Re: Book Recommendations?

Oh, man, here we go. I have 350+ novels of the type you're inquiring about, so I'll try to limit myself to authors =P

Jim Butcher, The Dresden Files, 7 books - Private Detective mystery meets wizard. Very funny stuff, but also very engaging and thought provoking. Also a sci-fi channel movie coming out in July

R. A. Salvatore, The Drizzt saga, sword of bedwyr trilogy, Those books about the magic stones =P - Great action/adventure swords and sorcery type fodder. Salvatore is one of the best writers for describing combat situations there is. Also, his Drizzt novels are based on the Forgotten Realms d&d universe, not dragonlance.

Margaret Weis & Tracy Hickman, Core Dragonlance books, deathgate cycle, rose of the prophet trilogy - Read the stuff previously mentioned, though I consider the Dragonlance stuff to be kind of intro to fantasy type material....but maybe that's jsut because I read them when I was 15. At any rate I really suggest you check out their non-dragonlance related works.

Mercedes Lackey, Valdemar Saga (20-odd books at this point I think, broken up into trilogies) - I will throw out a mild warning that some books center around homosexual characters, so if that's a problem for you don't read it.

George R. R. Martin's Fire and Ice Quartet. - Go read it =P

Well, that covers most of my fantasy related suggestions. Maybe if I get un-bored later I'll dig into my sci-fi stuff.

Crichton: Eaters of the Dead was a good one.

Too funny, presently I am reading "Life Expextency" by him. One of his best works IMO. Great premise to the story, a page turner for sure. Can't wait to finish it.

Re: Book Recommendations?

Cryptonomicon, I forget who the author is. Its a long book over 1k or so pages. I myself have never finished it but I plan to and what I did read was really good.

The other one that I've recently read was Timeline by Micheal Crichton. The book is excellent and I've read it many times the movie on the other hand was botched.

Also, the Mack Bolan series I always liked. But again, the author slips my mind as I haven't read them since I was younger. Mack Bolan was the idea for Stan Lee and the Punisher.

Err, it's a quintet now. Just finished the fourth book, where he states that he couldn't squish the story in 4 books.

I can recommend these:
- The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury - actually a collection of short stories - my favorite book of all times (SF)
- Hyperion by Dan Simmons (SF/Fantasy)
- Magician: Apprentice by Raymond Feist (Fantasy)
- The Forever War by Joe Haldeman (SF)

Re: Book Recommendations?

Octavia E. Butler's books are great. Two main series a trilogy and a duology. The Xenogenesis Trilogy is kinda hard to describe, one of those things that you have to actually read to get, but i highly recommend it. And the Earthseed duology , Parable of the Talents and Parable of the Sower, is about a post apocalyptic (not cliche post- apocalyptic, more of an economic collapse thing) US. She is one of the rare (only?) black female sci fi authors so alot of her stuff is really interesting and new, especially the Xenogenesis trilogy.

Other than that gotta second Cing. Read all the classic authors and you won't be dissapointed.

Neal Stephensen.

Another author of many single books I forgot: Lawrence Watt Evans. He wrote a ton of them and they are fairly short and light hearted. Get "The Misenchanted Sword". It is a great read.

I wasn't kidding go get Carol Berg. Right now. Seriously, stop reading the forums and get some of her books. Now.

Re: Book Recommendations?

For fun mindlessness, try the Destroyer series created by Warren Murphy and Richard Sapir. Now numbering well over 100 volumes. The movie sucked, but the books are a fun spoof of adventure and martial arts fiction, with over the top heroes and wacky spoofs of celebrities with names slightly askew to protect the guilty. A funny piece of formula is that chapter 2 always starts with "His name was Remo and....".

Mack Bolan was created by Jim Pendleton, but hundreds of authors have written novels that series. Some are good, some are just so horrible it hurts to read them, though... The older ones were consistently good.
