Re: The Book Thread!

Totally agree Ednos, Starship Troopers is great. I really enjoyed the movie as well, but for an entirely different reason and on an entirely different level.

Re: Book Recommendations?

If you guys like cheesy action novels, I just picked up the second book about a unique Homeland Security/FBI/US Army unit by Dale Brown. Good, entertaining, easy reads.

Act of War was the first, Edge of Battle is the second:

Re: Book Recommendations?

I recommend Chickenhawk by Robert Mason. It is a personal narrative of Mason's time in Vietnam as he flew over 1,000 combat missions as a Huey pilot with the 1st Air Cav.

Re: Book Recommendations?

Jonan, I read The Stand by Stephen King not long ago and it was definitely one of my favorite books ever. I read online though that it somehow ties into the Dark Tower series? Have you read it, or do you know if this is true? If that's the case, then I totally have to grab that series.

Actually a majority of Stephen Kings books tie into The Dark Tower Series.

Here are the referances from the stand that also correlate with The dark Tower Series (there may be more but this is what I have found).

References to The Dark Tower series from The Stand
-The novel contains the first published reference to King’s supervillain Randall Flagg. Randall Flagg and other elements of The Stand also appear in The Dark Tower series.
-The superflu is said to be what killed all the inhabitants of a parallel Kansas in Wizard and Glass.
-Abagail Freemantle is mentioned as being on a quest “near”/“parallel” to Roland Deschain’s quest in Wizard and Glass.
-Randall Flagg’s black stones are marked with a red eye, and Glen Bateman dreamed of a man standing on a cliff, with peering, endless red eyes gazing into the east. The red eye is the sigil of the Crimson King, who was described similarly in The Dark Tower; however, note that the Crimson King had never been mentioned before or inside this book.

*Edit - Just found a list of other Stephen King books that tie in with the Dark Tower. I thought there was more but this is what I found. 15 books is alot.

’Salem's Lot
· The Stand
· The Talisman
· Skeleton Crew
· It
· The Eyes of the Dragon
· Insomnia
· Rose Madder
· Desperation
· The Regulators
· Bag of Bones
· Hearts in Atlantis
· Black House
· Everything's Eventual
· From a Buick 8

The dark tower series is one of my favorites. Here is a roadmap that shows what books are related to the series.

Re: Book Recommendations?

Not sure if anyone has recommended this author, however, as light reading fun and thrilling, James Herbert, although he has published lots of sci fi type books its not a series, i have read "The Rats" The Fog" and "the Dark" they are usually based in England, as he is English, it adds a certain degree of something extra for us Brits because he describes places we have probably been in great detail, but that aside they are still good books.

unfortunately i find myself buried in Marx, Nietzsche, and other texts purely for study and these last few years i have only really read one book for pleasure, which was "The World According to Clarkson vol 1&2" what can i say, i enjoyed them immensely but they are not novels.

anyway, James herbert for light fun reading, not too involved but very interesting, sort of stuff you can read over a weekend.

You have to read Battlefield Earth by L. Ron Hubbard. It's a fantastic novel that simply couldn't be made into a movie.
.....The Scientology Guy?

............Do you suppose that's why Travolta did the movie? =P

Re: Book Recommendations?

Right now I'm reading Blue Latitudes by Tony Horowitz. If you've ever read his book Confederates in the Attic, you know what to expect. A really good read and a good work of history.

It absolutely is. Travolta became a friend of Hubbard and a fan of his novels after meeting him through Scientology. Hubbard had wanted to make Battlefield Earth into a film for a long, long time. After he died, Travolta vowed to bring the novel to the big screen. Too bad it was done so horribly, as it really is a great book.

I love science fiction but have always avoided this series because I thought it would be "preachy" about Scientology. If it's actually good I'll give it a read.

His novels don't even touch upon Scientology. Oh, and Battlefield Earth is a single book. Mission Earth is the ten book "decalogy".

But that brings up a good question. Has anyone here read Dianetics?

I haven't read (or seen) Battlefield Earth, but you could remove that title and insert "Starship Troopers" (Robert Heinlein) into the quote very easily.
