Re: Book Recommendations?
Just finished a pretty good read. Its probably the exact opposite of Calvin's recommendation.
The Code by Ross Bernstein. Bernstein dissects the role fighting and enforcers play in the NHL. Even if you are just a casual fan of sports I recommend this book as it looks beyond simply dropping the gloves but into the heart of athletic competition and how hockey epitomizes this spirit more than any other professional sport.

Re: Book Recommendations?
Some of these have been mentioned before, but nevertheless:
Read Kurt Vonnegut's books. Mainly, Slaughterhouse V, Cat's Cradle, and Breakfast of Champions. Those are some of his best sellers, but he was one of the greatest modern authors, so I highly recommend all of his books. Michael Chrichton is one of my favorite authors. I've greatly enjoyed all of his books, less so his last one, Next. Other than that, one of my favorite authors. Catch-22 by Joseph Heller is a must. If you enjoy it, you'll probably apperciate the sequel, Closing Time (good, but not AS good as the original IMO. More abstract) A Canticle for Leibowitz, and its sequel Saint Leibowitz and the Wild Hose Woman were both good books IMO. The sequel was not as similar as the original, but good none-the-less. The original is a post-apocalyptic tale where, well, you should read it ![]() A Confederacy of Dunces was good. Lord of the Flies and Catcher in the Rye are both classics, and are highly recommended (despite the fact that they are required for some schools).

Re: Book Recommendations?
Agreed. The first book, Wizards First Rule, is one of the best fantasy books I've ever read.
I've lost some respect for Jordon, simply because he turned what was a good quadrilogy into a franchise. You might as well be watching soap operas on TV. Enjoyed it. Somewhat dated, though. Quote:
Now for some of my own recommendations:

Speaking of castles, has anyone here read I Had Seen Castles by Cynthia Rylant. It's a very short read and a coming-of-age novel, but so poignantly written. I'd love for other opinions on this book.. I was really moved by it.

Re: Book Recommendations?
Star Fraction by Ken MacLeod. This book starts two series, one is another two books, one is just a single book that presents an alternate ending. This guy is fast becoming one of my favorite sci-fi authors. Very interesting social commentary.
Peter F. Hamilton is great. As well as the Nights Dawn trilogy, some of his earlier work, the Greg Mandel series (Mindstar Rising, Quantum Murder, Nano Flower) is really fun. Its about an ex military cyberpunk/psychic detective. Fun stuff. Anything by Iain Banks.

Wonderful read, in-depth characters, and thrilling sci-fi. Another series I can highly recommend: Otherland by Tad Williams You can find the Otherland series on Amazon.com. There are 4 books in the series totally approximately 3,300 pages. Wonderful read, in-depth characters, and thrilling sci-fi.

Tad Williams is currently writing a new fantasy series that is really good as well. I think the 1st one was "Shadowmarch" or something like that. I enjoyed it quite a bit. |

Re: Book Recommendations?
Otherland is one of my favorite all time book/series to read. Tad mostly writes in the Fantasy realm and Otherland I think was well done with a good mix of sci-fi and fantasy.

Re: Book Recommendations?
I am going to step on Rincewinds question and ask one of my own.
The son of a good friend recently told me he wanted to read more books. he is 11 years old and I didn't have much that would fit in his age group. I gave him my copy of Ender's Game but it was pretty much the only thing that I had that looked like it would fit for someone his age. I really want to foster his new found admiration for the written word and would like to get him a couple of books. Can anyone reccomend something for an 11 year old? He told me that he like WW2 topics. By the way my friend told me that his son was really enjoying Ender's Game. He apparently read it all the way home and was giggling in the back seat. |
