I don't remember which war it was surrounding, but one of my favorite books of all time is All Quiet on the Western Front which I read when I was about 12ish. I just remember being so intrigued by the detail of the soldiers' lives on the front lines. It had great character development too.

Somebody writes some pretty cool alternate history novels (Turteldove?) that I found interesting. I think several have been very WWII-centric.

Err, at 11 I don't think that book is the best choice due to it's allusions to sex and other sexual references. But, if he doesn't ask about then he probably didn't catch onto to the sex references.


Just introduce him to some Sci-Fi novels. Most of the paperback Star Trek or Star Wars novels are easily comprehended by 11 year olds. Just look for the ones that aren't 500+ pages long printed in small text (12 pt or larger = easier to read).

I haven't seen these mentioned anywhere. I can recommend:

Richard Morgan - Start with "Altered Carbon", there are 2 other books featuring his main character Takeshi Kovacs. Sci-Fi future timeline with great action.

And for the classic Sci-Fi, I haven't seen anyone mention Issac Asimov's epic trilogy "Foundation"

Larry Niven "Building Harlequin's Moon" among many others. I first read Niven, who seems to collaborate on many of his best books, last year, and read everything of his I can find.

Mentioned earlier, but just to give a 2nd vote for:

Stephen Donaldson's "Thomas Covenant" series

and

Jack McDevitt's "Chindi" is a great one off book

They're SO much better if you read the Robot series, followed by the Empire series, then the *whole* Foundation series.

Foundation was sort of weird of the bits and pieces that I could remember (which isn't much).

Wimpinator, I can recommend the L.E. Modesett Sci-Fi and Fantasy novels as well. They can be a medium length read (around 500 pages), but they are well written and really engages the reader who is tired of the more popular science fiction out there.

Now...i'm going to assume that this is missing simply due to the fact that absolutely everyone assumes everyone has read it, but seriously..

Douglas Adams - The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. (and the following 4 books of the trilogy.)

Seriously. Read it, in time for May 25th, Towel Day. Nothing like taking a perfectly average british man on a journey through space...a space quite unlike any you may have seen before. I can't stress how good this series is.

For another suggestion, look into Piers Anthony's Incarnations of Immortality series. Basically, take personifications of Death, Time, Fate, War, Nature, Good, and Evil. Standard fantasy stuff right? Only instead of them being mystical entities...they're just people. It's a job...with varying responsibilities and means of finding a successor. The books all tie into each other very well, and it's a very original and satisfying series.

I've read the whole entire series. It gets weird in the beginning, so if your 11/12 year old goes: "OMG, this is weird. What is this junk?". You can tell him or her that it is the greatest funniest book (or just point at the movie).

Passage at Arms - Glen Cook.

Picked it up at random at B&N the other day. It's about an Ex-Navy-turned-journalist type going up on a Climber (think diesel submarine in space) and the stresses of being in a small confined space during wartime. Sci-fi.

That book was about World War I if I remember correctly. I read it when I was about 12 as well, and I didn't get most of it, but I still enjoyed it.

House to House. Holy cow is this an intense book!!! Staff Sgt. Bellavia describes the combined military might of the U.S. Forces from his perspective as a combat infantryman dedicated to his missions. He’s brilliant on how relates a modern day soldier’s experience with his officers and subordinates, the brotherhood and pride of being part of platoon, but even more so, his description of combat is just stunning. The book is intense from the get go as he takes you with him on his mission in Muqdadyah and then as he prepares and battles his way into Fallujah. Courage, duty and the madness…I couldn’t put the book down.
