    Re: A SETI reminder

cings thread-bumping picture is very disturbing to say the least...

my only concern with remote-processing programs (folding@home being another) is my fear of straining my system out I.E. i, most times, leave my computer run in a semi-sleep mode, overnight, and if my CPU is running 100% (or close to it) 24/7.. the most initial thing would be the heat in my computer room, in the winter, i have the heating duct not only closed, but a towel stuffed into the vent to prevent any heat from entering the already 75-77F room, with the window sometimes cracked, and in the summer, my rig must be turned off at night because it gets so warm.. my cpu/mobo temps are fine, but the room temp is hot... (water cooling wont help, because you are dispersing the same amount of heat into the same atmosphere with a different means of a cooling medium, the heat of the water still heats the air.....) but my long term concern is that wont it wear on my system if there is load 24/7? shorten the lifespan? not to mention the cost of powering the average high end system is about $50 a month increase in the power bill

Yes, it will probably shorten the lifetime of your PC from 30 years to around 10 years. Are you planning on keeping that computer for ten years? Most gamers replace their machines long before they reach the end of their usable life.

Background computing is best done on systems that would be on anyway, like servers.

It would be cool if these programs could be run on old Linux routers, which are really running Linux behind the scenes.

And, yes, Cing's image disturbs me. A lot. And I'm from San Francisco!

ok, it is trying to download the assignments or whatever, but they wont download, i checked the preferences and the only one that seemed like it would hamper was the DL speed cap which was set to 0.0 but normally 0.0 = unlimited, i set it to 1000Kb/s and still nothing

    Re: A SETI reminder

What SETI needs to do is get the app to run on consoles and portable devices (ipods, pda, psp, cells, etc.). That to me is key. The whole PC market is really niche in terms of the @home stuff. It'd be best if it broke out of the mold.

It's a really simple install process. The only thing you might want to do is make sure that the names of your computers aren't made public (as discussed in this thread...).
