I just saw the request for specific gametimes. I'll keep that in mind when I review demos in the future.

I would be happy to convert the existing demos into something managable and watchable for everyone. Just give me a little time. Fraps is working great now that I'm using my audigy. I've just got some details I still need to hammer out before I begin any video editing. I would hope to be up and running 100% by the weekend.

I think having those two demos running side by side would be a great idea BTW. I'll look into that.

Apo's stated he wants all the graphic bells and whistles running when the movie footage is captured. I don't run with all of those bells and whistles. If YOU DO run with all those bells and whistles, will they render in your HL client when you watch the demo, even though they didn't render in my HL client when I recorded it?

I would think they WOULD, since an HL demo is nothing more than a stream of data about what happened in the game? Wouldn't the recreation of that game fall victim to whatever video settings you have on your HL client?

Come to think of it, HL demos represents one of the best models by which to create this movie. Several members in Tactical Gamer CREATING data which allows a small subset of very high-end machines to create footage based off of that data. That way you have the highest sample of gameplay footage from which to select scenes when building the movie, and the scenes are rendered with the greatest level of ... bells and whistles.

How long are these clips going to be? I was thinking maybe 20 to 30 seconds of game footage for each game hosted.

I suppose you don't want footage to be longer than the attention span of the viewer. That will dictate the length of the entire movie, not the length of each game's time within that movie, which I suspect will closerly follow the amount of total time in the movie divided by the number of titles showcased in that movie, relative of course to that title's popularity within either the TG audience or the audience we're targeting with the movie.

Well the reason for my question is, I dont honestly think you can get a general idea of NS (on TG anyway) in a 20 second clip. Its going to be hard (at least with NS anyway) to show the team work aspect that we offer by just flashing a clip of gameplay.

    IMO anyway.

I see your point, but I definately think it's possible. Depending on the moment, this can be conveyed in 3 or 4 seconds of footage. Who's to say which footage is the "best", and who knows how easy or difficult it is to impress someone. Think of how many NS games you've played on "public server" where no one was working together. Hell, just our movie showing a shotgun guarding a grenade launcher while he lobs grenades around the corner into the hive is going to impress some players.

Other players, who have a higher opinion of "public play," are going to be harder to impress. It's going to be harder to, in their perception, create a gap between "public" gameplay and TG gameplay. For this viewer, a set of events spanning 30 or even 40 seconds may be necessary.

You bring up a very valid point, and it deserves consideration.

Jedi Academy runs the demo based off the system the demo is running on, so that would work (considering I run full-blown details at 1280x960). I would hope HL does the same thing.

To bad I never got demos of those games where I went postal with the shotgun on those unsuspecting skulks. Something tells me our best demos of teams moving out in force will come from combat games.

If we are going to do something like this, maybe we should think about letting one person spectate on a 6 vs 6 game or something. Speccing is the best way we've gotten demos on JA.

The NS server will record HLTV demos automatically of every round. HLTV demos capture all data of the entire round and allow a person watching the demo (later) to change cameras, change players, etc... in real-time. This is ideal for creating this movie. In beta4a, HLTV is flawed. Hopefully this will be fixed soon.

In the meantime, I'm sure we could arrange for players to spectate from time to time.

That would work, but a playable demo in something like avi format would only show what the recorder was seeing. I just recorded the origins demo in fraps and it's two 3 GB avis. I haven't compressed them yet. The sound is also screwed because of the difference in FPS. I need to manually set it to 20 FPS I guess. I may have to go even lower with how large these are going to be. More testing to be done.

That would be the end result.. But i'd want a few minutes of quality video from which to select for a finalized video.

Assembly and optimization to be done in Adobe Premiere. I can output multiple formats as well as RealMedia formats to run off our streaming server.
