Re: School Is Almost Out!
Sorry, but could one of you chaps explain the grade levels in Britain real quick? Over here, kids must start school in kindergarten where they are taught mostly social skills and it's ensured that they know their alphabet and numbers and colors and stuff. 1st-through 8th grades are all part of primary school. Some places will seperate k-6th grade from 7th-8th grade (called middle school or Jr. High school). Then 9th through 12th grade (frosh, sophomore, jr. , sr. yrs) is secondary schooling or high school. Senior year in high school is the last year mandated by the governent, and usually the last year of free education. After that comes 4-12 years of higher education at a college or university.
To you guys college and university are two completely different things? For us they're almost synonymous.Become a supporting member!

Re: School Is Almost Out!
ok nursery, for 4 year olds
couting 1-10 colours painting pictures and kiddies stuff.
5 yr olds reception, one year stage inf integration with primary school, baisic math alphabet ect ect
6-11 primary school
from noting to the baisics of algebra sex education reproduction ect ect
secondary school
11-16 you learn science math geography history now comming up to what you will need to know in life leaving school and baisically sparking interest.
you can leave school now no quams, alot of people in UK do leave at 16
go to college
this is a 2-4 year course of higher education in 3-4 chosen subjects. this is aiming at a career
university is the detailed learning of 1-2 of those 3-4 courses you choose aimed at a specific carreer...
its just a triangle thing, you can leave college and have alot of options but not one really specific, you go to uni and you have all those options plus a few more but you will on papper be totally suited to a few jobs... thats all really.

oxford is one of the two oxford and cambridge which are the best unis in England. but if you have a degree from any of those 4 you will be recognised world over, but i must say vetting and selection for these places is well its crazy the ammount of people who dont get in who have straight a's
i dont think either university would say that the other was better than it so you wont get an answer better than that without alot of research.
i do know that that the tutoring you get at oxford is 121 which is why something like 99% of students pass with a 2:1 degree
1 student and one tutor and he teaches you everything you didnt understand in the lectures for the week, simeple as that......but you gotta have the big bucks to get an education like that.

Re: School Is Almost Out!
Interesting. I am smart, but Harvard and Yale are like Mensa material students. I am a above average student, but come on, I am also abit poor. I would have to be validictoriane (I probably spelt that wrong), or maybe some scholarships, it will be tough if I try.

Re: School Is Almost Out!
I spoke to someone who did American Studies in both the UK and US and she said the US course was far easier. I have heard other rumours that UK uni courses are harder but no actual hard evidence.
The 2 years between high school and Uni can either be spent in college, which is a seperate institution, or sixth form which is attached to a high school. It is called sixth form because they used to number from when you started high school.
There has been a recent increase in the amount of courses and modern appreticeships etc that you can now do after high school. I believe the prevailing thinking is that most people should get some form of further training or education after 16 even if its not a degree.
Oxbridge (oxford and Cambridge) have long been regarded as the top UK universities, but stastics and assesments often show that many other universities offer just as good an education, especially in certain subjects.
"but you gotta have the big bucks to get an education like that."
Currently Oxbridge charges the same to UK students as all other UK universities but that might change. International students get charged a lot more at all universities and fees vary.Wintermute

Re: School Is Almost Out!
This is from what I have heard.
European courses concentrate more on theory in regards to the subject matter while American courses concentrate more on practicality in regards to the subject matter. So comparing the 2 is like compare apples to oranges.
Also, there are alot more than just "2" good colleges/universities here. It really depends on the subject matter. Engineering for example, one of the best colleges in the states (and I am pretty sure it is ranked pretty high in the world) is Rose Hulman Institute of Technology. However, this is primary for just your BS in an engineering field. For masters and PhD degrees, other colleges provide a better program for engineering than Rose does.

LOL!!! Yale and Harvard are most definitely NOT the cream of the crop in the US. They're good schools for certain fields of study. The best, perhaps... But just like every other school, it is possible to merely buy a degree.

Re: School Is Almost Out!
Oddly enough, if you want a graduate degree in Jazz, one of the best state schools is(was - there were some changes) University of Northern Colorado in Greely, Colorado. Now, who the hell decided to put such a good jazz program in the middle of a town based around farming?!?!? I mean, seriously. There was only ONE place in town that had a jazz night. And it smelled like ass all the time. I mean all the time.
I'm with IceCold, though. I have yet to see a school where you can't just buy a degree. And that's what most kids seem to be doing.
