You are a wise man. I inherited that Balvenie bottle from my brother-in-law and I'm sure he had it for a long time. In fact I think the first I tried it was during our tasting...so you are probably right, the damn thing's gone flat...

...which is fantastic when you think about because now I have cause to go buy another bottle!

Gents...not included in my tasting notes was our experiment trying:
  1. On ice
  2. Neat
  3. With a very small amount of water

The conclusion across the board was that "on ice" closes the flavour down in a big way, and with just a touch of water the aroma opens up tremendously...for a short while.

One of the participants actually runs a business in the wine industry so we got the skinny on how the scent of the drink is such a large part of the tasting experience.

So I only drink my whisky now with a touch of water. FYI a "touch" is a teaspoon or less.

Unless of course I'm drinking Talisker...then it's as much damn ice as the tumbler will hold!

Cheers gents,

I've heard of it, but never tried it, due to the expense, and the rarity in Boston.

Oh, and I drink all my Scotches and whiskeys neat.

Hrm.... I had always gone with ice. But I will now be more judicious I think. I will try Ice for less quality scotch, a touch of water for the good stuff... may be a revolution for me! I love this thread...

i go with ice for most whiskey's, and whiskys alike, although i never put water in any of them, if the company wanted to wash the flavour out before it got to the pallet, they would make it that way.... just my opinion, i never putanything but ice in my drink....

A very small amount of water my friend, certainly not enough to dilute the whisky significantly...certainly no more than your melting ice anyway

Cheers,

Glenfarlas - I must admit I have not heard of that one.

Bump.

Ardbeg. If you haven't had an opportunity to enjoy some of the Ardbeg bevys then make it a priority soldier to procure some of this liquid joy.

I've almost polished off my bottle of Ardbeg Uigeadail, and also recently had opportunity to enjoy a pour from a very old bottle...it was truly fantastic.

Cheers,

Re: NYT Does Irish Whiskey

Nice bump. I forgot about this thread and discovered Lagavulin quite by mistake... and if anyone wants the rest of my bottle I may even pay shipping.

I have a very nice bottle of Ballantine's Finest in my cupboard at the moment, though it must have a small hole at the bottom because it is disappearing quite steadily.

Re: NYT Does Irish Whiskey

Hmmmm, i had a bit of a rough night last night, so a drinking thread probably not the best place for me at the minute....but what the hell!

Im a huge fan of Bushmills and Jameson, though i do believe them to be quite different. Used to love a good old bottle of Jack, and if there was none available, i would try Jim Beam, but im stuck on Bush now....You guys should try the tour, i live 1 hour from the factory....ill have a look see if i can find any pics!.....

Re: NYT Does Irish Whiskey

I recently toured the Glenlivet Distillery in Scotland and learned a couple of new things.

First, the "recommended" amount of water to add (if you add water at all) is approximately one-half the volume of whisky. It DOES change the flavor/aroma a bit, not better or worse, but different. They don't recommend using ice...and damn near fainted when asked about soda!

Second, generally speaking, any whiskey/whisky is diluted with water at the time of bottling to around 44% alcohol content. "Cask Strength" (which I also bought) is around 60-65% alcohol for the 16 year old stuff...and is way too sharp/overpowering from the alcohol, at least to my taste. The "normal" strength is around 44% alcohol and is far more palatable. The cask strength whisky, available only at the distillery, is more of a novelty as bottled. Adding more water to approximate the alcohol content of normally bottled spirits is a very good idea.
