Re: Mandatory pre-post spell check?

How about just the option to use a forum side spell checker (as with digg.com)

I say no, but maybe we could only apply it to non-members.

Re: Mandatory pre-post spell check?

I think this would be a good idea. For those of you still in school, it can reinforce your knowledge of grammar concepts and correct your mistakes so you can learn from them.

Re: Mandatory pre-post spell check?

I voted no.

I always put my posts through a spell check because I have trouble spelling words; using spell check is a matter of necessity for me. I believe that a mandatory system could come off as snobbish but an optional button would be convenient.

Re: Mandatory pre-post spell check?

I voted yes, but only if it comes with an option for UK/Australian spelling.

Some things should definitely be spell checked!

Well said. I voted no simply because there is 'personality' in the way people write and I would not want to see that blurred or sanitized.

Cheers.

Re: Mandatory pre-post spell check?

I voted yes, but as someone stated above, only if I could choose the have the UK spelling of words. Though I tend to spell centre 'center' anyway, too much CSS...

Re: Mandatory pre-post spell check?

Mandatory preview might be sufficient. IIRC, the forums at http://www.dslreports.com/ include a spell checker and previewer. You don't have to change anything in your original post, but you don't have to look like a fool because you missed a typo.

I'm a spelling nazi, but mostly on myself. If the feature were here, I'd definitely use it.

Re: Mandatory pre-post spell check?

I'm trying to make my posts a bit more comprehensible. I have noticed that I often type the same way as I talk.

For some reason I don't use the word 'have' very often. I'll just miss it out completely:

"I got two apples."

Sometimes I miss out the word 'I' at the beggining of a sentence:

"Don't like the sound of that."

My posts were never that bad to begin with but I'd still like to improve on how they read. I think a spellchecker is a good idea. To me it doesn't matter if the spell checker is optional or madatory because I would use it.

Hmmm, I do this often, as well. I know that "you" can be an understood subject in proper grammar, but can "I"?

Re: Mandatory pre-post spell check?

Without the pronoun the whole meaning changes from a description of personal feeling to an order.

It's a bit like when approaching a hill on a motorway, and you get a warning sign about lorries moving slowly, which simply reads "Slow Lorries". Why would you want to slow them? They're going slowly enough as it is!
