yep, not sure if that's intentional but really shoots your point apart if it wasn't. And when statements are made like that about peoples posts you really do sound arrogant and egotistical

I don't know what you're talking about when you ask if it's intentional...

Arrogant, or egotistical? That's exactly what I'm trying to explain. It's the opposite of that. It's a matter of communication, not superiority!

Re: Mandatory pre-post spell check?

You made this whole big thing about effectively communicating then misspelled a word, which really doesnt help your stance.

I guess saying that if you do not do it right you aren't worth my time or energy, doesn't sound arrogant or egotistical, my apologies.

It's not a reason to implement a mandatory spell checker at TG. Google Toolbar takes care of spell checking for any web form.

I had to reread that second sentence too. It's too bad a spell checker wouldn't pick that up.

Re: Mandatory pre-post spell check?

There's value to be had in lessoning the frequency with which readers are required to read something more than once to even, at all, be able to understand it. Homophones are the problematic exception, but they don't invalidate the idea of a spell checker.

I'm shocked that 6 out of 10 folks don't immediately oppose the idea of a mandatory spell check. I expected the results to be far more opposed to the very idea... not because it's a bad idea, but because it's so unorthodox.

I'm quite surprised that so many would like it. They want to save time reading posts yet don't mind wasting time going through a spell checker. Most of the time I don't need one and I don't want the added time of clicking more buttons to post a message.

I'd be all for the idea if it were a feature instead of a mandatory check but it's not an option. I remember seeing a PHP module to add to the phpBB CMS for spell checking. However, it was an optional check. On posting forms, there was a spell checker button that would popup a spellchecker. Any changes would be put back in the posting form.

Sorry, I didn't notice that I had misspelled a word, which one was it?

And I don't think that anyone here is talking about the occasional misspelling or typo. It's all about effective communication. I know that my grammar would be considered atrocious by just about any English teacher, but I also know that the majority of my posts are grammatically correct enough to get the point across to anyone that can read.

Lets not make this about nitpicking...

Well, most people read a lot more than they post, so the time savings in not having to decipher some posts would probably be worth it... Maybe not, as it has been pointed out that many of the problems aren't going to be caught by a spell checker anyway.

Re: Mandatory pre-post spell check?

I do not believe a mandatory (or pretty much forced) spell check is necessary. Obviously for any truely-meant-to-be public articles placed on the website have deservingly been spellchecked or checked for spelling by the poster.

For writings that are "released" to the public for consumption it is almost a must for the content to be screened, checked, re-read, before its published. However you have to ask, should our forums be treated in the same manner? While its more logical that the posts appearing on the front page should be checked for spelling, and that most "official" posts in the forums (like stickies for an example) are msot likely also read more than once before posting (or checked while writing), what about the rest of our posts?

What about the slang that we use, 'teh' speak that we might employ for emphasis, or other similar uses of "mispelled" words.

What about the fact that we do have under 18 members, and the sense that TG is supposed to be a home for mature gamers. Do we really need to place this restriction for a population (which I am not implying is of under the age of 18) that is probably insignificant. Is it really too difficult to read a mis-spelled word? So you had to re-read a sentence twice...but did everyone else?

My point here is that its not even about effective communication or making it easier for people to read. It's just not necessary...just look at all the posts in this thread. A lot of them are quick comments, someone's 2 cents, an opinion, an observation, nothing more than a few words or a few sentences to read.

The entire idea of enforcing such an option is kind of bizzare for what is thought as a pretty free and open community that is flexible. =Sarc= pointed this out in his post above. If anything the option of spellchecking your post in a noticiable area such as next to the post button or next to the preview button would be good enough.

Of course you could just have it spell check without even informing us, but that would be just as bad and ironically just as good as telling us that its enforced when there are probably a lot of poeple who dont mind or just dont feel its a TG kind of ordeal to have.

In all honesty, Tactical Gamer isn't meant for younger kids. It is designed and here for mature adults. If a younger kid wants to play here and participate in the community, they are held to the same standards we would any other member.

We haven't had too many issues with people whose first language is not English. I'm not into the whole straw man method of debate though. So we can just leave it at that.

Here, here. I've seen young teens with much better skills than many adults.

If anything, people whose first language is not English tend to be more careful.

Just how heavyweight is this Google toolbar people are proposing? I don't want another Real Media or Quicktime that screws up my system.
