Or display it in each person user control panel so that only he or she can see how they are doing in the community. It would give that person a perspective on how they are doing and not be compared to everyone else.

    Re: Reputation System

Well, last I checked, Wyzcrak, Icky, and I were at the top of the rep heap.

I always thought that that was strange because, yes, I post alot, but they can't all be good! Statistically, some posts have to suck, right?

    Like this one.

Now THAT is a good idea. I could re-enable the system so people could still provide feedback, yet remove the whole bubble visibility so it would retain its usefulness as a feedback tool and at the same time remove the reasoning behind the rep inflation and bubble-wars.

Any other feedback on this idea?

For all its flaws, like most others have stated here, I enjoyed the rep system. The feedback that came from individual posts was quite valuable to me on more than one occasion.

What about resetting it and just not displaying the green bubbles?
Or, leave the comments in our CP's, but just don't display any bubbles. I too liked to see when I did something that made some people happy. I don't care about post count or how many bubbles I have, but I did like seeing comments in my CP.

    Re: Reputation System

that would be perfect for what most of us use it for. just being able to send a note or comment to the user without posting is a great idea

    + imaginary rep
that sounds like a good idea trooper.

    See my above post

It's nice to be able to say "hey, nice post" or "Hey, bad post" without having to make a post to do so.

I like it - It's not about the bubbles - it's about the ability to get/give someone a 'pat on the back' ... makes you feel like an appreciated part of the community and encourages you to do more.

What about just incrementing a person's rep by 1 each time instead of using the calculation that's based on the giver's rep?

I agree. Give the ability to give a comments without a + or - rep. That way each person can see how others felt about their posts.

    Re: Reputation System

It's too bad we can't do something like a markup language, where people could attach linked notes to a thread for both the author and commentator to see. Kind of like a sidebar. You can do this in PMs, I suppose, but it would be cool to have that in the interface.

I liked the weighted rep system based on the giver's own standing. But it did make it kinda unfair for some people. Ever get hit with a Wyzcrak Rep-bomb? Pow! At the lower levels a single + from him was worth a bubble.

    Re: Reputation System

I'm perfectly happy without the bubbles. I'm pretty sure my string of bubbles had stopped growing anyway. The one good thing I found with the bubbles was that sometimes I would see a guy with one bubble after his name and I would realize that he just wasn't getting the love he deserved.

An abbreviated bubble system might be better, like only go up to 3 or something. That way, you have something to show for your positive contributions at the beginning, and after that it is personal input only.

    Re: Reputation System

I like the idea with rep with no bubbles, it provides the functionality without any nasty side effects.

    Re: Reputation System

A few thoughts, no idea about the practicality of them as possibilities though.

Leave the system so that all rep comments can still be seen by the user but tweak it so that they only receive the rep point increase which goes towards the visible bubbles if there is multiple reps for a single post/thread. This would stop one individual being able to influence rep without there being a general community feeling that the point/post was valid and worthy.

How about some other form of visual aid to someones contribution to the community. Something that would fill the void between outstanding volunteer ribbon and a generic +rep. The only way i can see this happening is if it was unilaterally conferred by someone with admin/moderator status. Could well be an administrative nightmare though.

EDIT: Wow, 9 posts between clicking new reply and submit.

I didn't notice my rep last night, but me is sad to see my 1207 points vanish, with probably about half of them given by one person :P

    Re: Reputation System

the bubbles got skewed because some of us were dishing out rep 50pts at a time... if each +rep was one point, it'd be a lot better depiction of your rep.
